IJN Mogami (Tamiya 1/350)
Thank you Christian, Guido, Jose and Bob for your encouraging comments and smilies!
Guido, concerning Heiden. I never heard of this event before. I planned to go to the Intermodellbau but the EME seems to be more interesting. Thanks for the information. Will you be there?
Update of my progress: Now with the funnel in place I can speed up. The order of assembly is very important in this Tamiya kit. I had to install the funnel and the AA gun deck around it simultaneously. The next was the foremast, followed by the central ventilators. The bridge is not yet glued.Dirk

Hi, Dirk!
Yes! The Gamblers will be there! And you will have a rare opportunity to see The Bauman with a selection of his models on mainland Europe. That'll be worth the drive! I hope to see you there!
Cheers,
Guido

Thanks Leigh for your comments!
Guido, now with these clear arguments it seems to be a crime not to go to Heiden. See you there!

wow, that sounds really good. Also "Mlders" a member of this Forum will be there. Heiden was a new model show well planed and organized. The first show was in 2009 with only less ship models. But I'm really happy to be there this year with the German Gamblers and JB. Also nice to see some other ship modelers known from MW.com for a face to face visit. Well I think this will be a great show this year - I look forward to see you there
By the way, a little teaser:

Hi Christian,
looking to see you, Guido, Mlders and Jim in Heiden. I think I will recognize your ship models and then find you.
A picture of myself is on page 3. So you can recognize me (But I will not wear my gas mask.).

Hi Jose,J. Soca wrote:can you tell me how did you come up with the japanese flag that doesnt look to me like paper but a kind of cloth material, real neat i must say!!
indeed, the flag is not a decal nor from paper. It is really of cloth material and from BECC model accessories (UK).
I can recommend these flags. One possibility to buy them is from
http://www.cornwallmodelboats.co.uk/aca ... flags.htmI
Apart from other nationalities it seems that they have only the four Japanese flags shown here.
J01 Japan national flag
J02 Japan naval ensign
J20 Japan admirals flag
J21 Japan vice admirals flag
For 1/350 ship models the size AAA (10 mm length) is perfect. For my Chokai model (flagship) I used the larger size of the naval ensign (size AA 15 mm length) plus the AAA vice admirals flag.
They have of course also the White Ensign and a lot of others.

IJN Mogami (Tamiya 1/350)
Here a mini progress update:
I added the Lionroar details to the 4.5m rangefinders and additionally I removed the plastic triangular struts and replaced them with PE parts.
Next was the main gun director: I cut small brass sheet strips (width 0.5 mm) for the jalousie. I added a hatch (following the Miyukikai plan) and a half rail from a generic IJN rail set (LE350023). Looks good before painting .... Here main gun dirctor plus range finder are shown. Dirk

IJN Mogami (Tamiya 1/350)
Some time ago I ordered the Master IJN 25mm AA gun brass barrels. My plan was to combine them with the Veterans Models triple and single mounts. When I saw the tiny barrels I gave up my plan. But then I saw hj1985s Yukikaze build
viewtopic.php?f=60&t=49009&hilit=yukikaze
and he proved that this combination is possible and an improvement.
So thanks to hj1985 I tried it myself. Here is now the result of my first prototype.First I airbrushed the Voyager parts. Then I carefully removed the Voyager resin barrels with a mini drill. I glued the unpainted Master barrels to the Voyager part. In the picture (Mogami92) with this very large magnification two things which I have to improve become obvious: (1) For the middle barrel I used too much superglue. This leads to a halo and an adverse effect by hiding the details. (2) I removed not enough resin (part of the former resin barrel is still visible). I only want to keep the resin support of each barrel.
I can not see these details during modelling and my conclusion is that I need an optivisor. I have to find out where I can order it in Germany or Europe.
Mogami93 depicts the prototype Master/Voyager triple mount after the final Kure grey airbrushing. At the moment I have no decision if I will use shields or not. If yes, I will use the parts from Lionroar which look a little bit better then the Voyager shields and are easier to attach (complete base with the two shields).
There is one picture from Mogami showing her in 1943. The triple mounts there have no shield. Does anybody know if shields very added to the triple mounts later?

IJN Mogami (Tamiya 1/350)
In the following pictures some of the Master(barrel)/Lionroar(shield)/Voyager(base) triple 25mm mounts can be seen in position. In addition the first single mount (Master(barrel)/Voyager(base)) is visible. So this ship will be a real Mogami hybrid in several senses.I started to add some details to the bridge area but still a lot is to do. I did some plastic surgery and removed the plastic navigation lights. I added the Lionroar parts instead and I think this is a small improvement (compare Mogami03 with Mogami97). Now I followed the advice of Jim and others from the forum and bought a device similar to the optivisor with integrated LED illumination. This is like a new life!Dirk

Hi Jose, thank you!
Its not the captain. But you are close: Its Mogami's navigator, Lieutenant Commander Nakano!

IJN Mogami (Tamiya 1/350)
I started with the boats. Unfortunately it seems that Voyager has stopped the production of the very nice resin IJN 11m motor boat. But the similar IJN 11m motor pinnace is still available. Therefore I used the later and performed some resin surgery (Mogami100 and Mogami101). I also substituted the house with the Flyhawk part (from FH350006). This produces nice open windows.
Then I added the 6 m sampan (Mogami102), one 9 m boat (Mogami103) and one 12 m motor launch (Mogami104). For the holders I used brass strips (0,1 mm thickness/ 0,5 mm width, from http://bavaria-modellbahnen.de/shop/ind ... =2a&page=2) and insect pins with a diameter of 0,1 mm.
The 12 m motor launch is not yet glued because I have to attach the 11 m motor boat and very long holders. Instead of the Lionroar chocks I used here the larger ones from the Hasegawa boat set which fits for this boat combination.
