Tin Can (DD/DE) Group Build!

I'm doing the very first destroyer, HMS Havock. If it works out nicely I may be doing Hornet (half sister and the second destroyer) as a waterline version.
Some progress shots. 4hrs of work since the start of the project.

Pieter, You look to be off to a great start on your project. What ship are you doing? You posted that this is the first tin can.

Hi Gordon ,

At a quick glance, the Coontz Kit appears to be the mid to late 80's. I am trying to wrap up the Hancock, Pittsburg, and the airwings for Ranger, Hancock, and Lexington.
It may be awhile before I get to the Coontz.

I am looking forward to seeing the DD's as they get built. There is a lot of proggress already.

Count me in! I don't know which ship I'll build, but it'll be in 1/700 scale for sure. I have to finish the 1/350 Bouvet first!

For those that asked, yes I am doing a Butler DE, a modified one though. I'm almost done with the design drawings. I'm drawing them to scale so I'll be able to easily transfer them to the kit and knock out the mods in no time. Anyone have a favorite member of the class they think I should depict? So far none of the names jump out at me. Any of them named for a particularly unique individual? I'll have to read up on their namesakes while I build and decide on a good candidate. Nice thing is the kit comes with a huge sheet of numbers so you can mix and match to get any ship you want! I'll post a scan later on tonight. Cutting of the plastic should start tomorrow.

Everyone's builds are looking great so far! Glad to see more people joining in the fun as well. I can tell the finished builds thread will be beyond awesome already

Edit: Alright I've found my ship! The USS Oswald A. Powers (DE-542), named for a ENS Powers, a member of VT-3 (CV-5) at Midway and one of the 10 planes that did not return; only TWO returned to The Yorktown, 4 to The Enterprise, and none to The Hornet. A very bad day indeed. The Powers was one of several DEs that were suspended following the end of the war and were subsequently scrapped incomplete. I'll remedy that and have her in commission as planned in 1945. To facilitate the modifications I'll have her get torpedoed during the battle for Iceland, limp back to the States, and get re-built as the lead ship of the modified Butler Class. The rest of the new class will be built from the keel up or modified on the slipways with the new mods. Several DEs ate a U-Boat torpedo and survived to be repaired so the events are more than plausible.

Mods:
-25' Hull plug inserted in between the funnel and bridge structure allowing for sufficient internal hull space for an emergency diesel generator and more fuel oil. Above decks the plug allows a deck house extension to be be added housing two fixed 21" torpedo tubes (staggered) for Mk-35 long range homing torpedoes with 2-3 reloads per tube, 6-8 total.
-Two fixed Hedgehogs mounted atop torpedo deck house (about 25-30 degrees off the center line) with reload lockers. Two reloads for each mount.
-Mk-56 director atop the bridge to control the 5"/38s.
-One quad and two twin 40mm Bofors installed in place of the triple torpedo tubes.
-Whaleboat re-located to port side of the funnel.
-Funnel 20mm mounts moved aft of whaleboat and reduced to two mounts.
-ECM mast added abaft the funnel with one TDY-1 jammer ala DD-445 Class.
-Radars upgraded to SC-2 and SG.
-Added supports to 20mm mounts that hang off the superstructure.

I goofed a few things in the drawing
-Forward 20mm mounts beside the bridge will be reduced to one per side.
-Starboard 20mm mount abaft the funnel will be moved forward abreast the funnel. Port mount was displaced aft due to whaleboat.


So there you have it, enjoy! I'll slice the hull in half tomorrow and start on the plug.

Slow beginings on HMS Bentink. Decided to try and go all out, using Trumeter USS England + add ons as below.



have drilled out the fairleads around the hull edge and filled any unwanted holes the maindeck. Most RN Captain class had the 2 single 20mm on the quarterdeck removed and only carried 2 k guns on each side. Bentink was one of the first Buclkye's and did not have the 2 20mm fitted on B gundeck & only had one 20mm on each side abeam of the funnel.



Have also started work, with some success and some otherwise on the B gun deck / bridge structure. I am having a go at putting some 3 dimension feel into the steps up the side of the structure & the handrails, which are just moulded lines on the kit.

The handrails are working ok (cut down 1/700th 3 bar railings, the steps less so, (cut up vertical ladder) will strip off what i hade done & try to get it more even.

Ok, so I'll be scratchbuilding the USS Mahan (with a little help from the Midship "Models" kit...) in 1/700.

We've got some really cool projects going here, and with so many great builders it's all a little intimidating Keep it up guys!

Everybodies kits are looking great thus far. Remember this group build is not only limited to gun destroyers. You can build modern missile ones as well. My own second build will be a sovremenny.

Looks nice. Is this the Gulfstream kit? I ask because I just picked the Ward (and the YMW Benham) up from a fellow modeler. How do you like the kit so far?

I like this kit very much! It is very well designed and executed for a resin kit of it's age, only think that I could say is lacking is the instructions. They have some wonderful illustrations, but they rely mostly on written instructions. For someone who knows this class inside and out, that might not be a problem considering the low piece count but it can get confusing. Now that my water base has dried, I will get back to working on the ship. Hope to post some pics this weekend of where I am at. To everyone else who has been posting, some really humbling work out there! You guys are doing awesome, keep it up

Dear All,

With a bit of luck, here are a few pikkies of the Dragon 1/700 USS Monssen, some of the main parts dry-fitted, and a sprue of the little bits. Please escuse the filler that I have not yet rubbed down, but this a work in progress, of course.

I must say that I'm very impressed with the level of detail that dragon have managed to cram in. I don't think there is a great deal that needs to be added. However, I shall be replacing masts, radars and Oerlikons. Railings and rigging go without saying.

Now let's see if this computer dum-dum can get this machine to play ball. Wish me luck!!

It's great to see the progress you have made on your respective builds.

This last week I got a lot done or started but didn't get very much finished. I finished the 5"guns , mounted the deck to the hull, added some details to the torpedo tubes, deck houses, started on the stacks, mast and the Mk 37 director and got the twin 40mm guns ordered. Gee, that sounds like a lot but the pictures don't look a lot different than the last ones I posted.

Well late post for me But im in for this GB and Co Host with the Good Doctor, Im in for a 1/700 Dragon Arleigh Burke USS. Higgins DDG-76 and Possibly DKM Zclass # 37 Pic to follow

I've started working on weapons and small fittings, which will be added later in the build. Guns and navigational aids are from a Kombrig kit. The guns will have extra parts and shields added.

On the deck I've added the funnels, conning tower and the large ventilators as well has the engine casings. As these vessels had hardly any superstructures almost everything happened on deck, which means will have to built much more detail. Conditions on board in heavy weather must have been awful.
Total time spent so far: about 10hrs.

The USS Fletcher build continues, all of the major components are now done and it's the little things that need to be worked on now. I hope to get a coat of primer on her this weekend.
