Hi Pim I have a large storage draw , in goes all the Evergreen styrene but I still have to spend time looking for the right strip to do the job . When I exhaust any of the strips I take the pack to one side . pin it on the board so i know I have to re-order that pack. There is one builder on this board that has a large storage rack for all the Evergreen in a workshop I could only dream about .

Hi Rob good to hear from you .I was on Fort George some months ago and you could fit the Darings hanger into one corner of this huge "space"
Here is a photo of part of the hanger on Fort George .The roof crane is much larger than that fitted to Daring. Like Daring the Hanger space has some similarities so best of luck Rob with your Fort Grange .

As you take stock of the detail around the hanger there are certain parts that just can not be disregarded because of what they are and their proximity to the entrance . This is just one area which will be next on the list. Some one said I was mad now I'm begining to realize that he may be right !!

Thanks Ron I shall be looking forward to seeing both you and Anthony at the Convention . No pool but wall to wall boats. I have made a list of some much needed supplies , all my fine brushes are less no these days and I shall make a bee line for the tool stand , more drill bits are in order

Great work Dave, your attention to detail is amazing. It makes me realise how much stuff there is inside a hangar. When it comes to my own build I guess I may have to post a request for more pictures over on CASF.

Beautiful job, Dave! I'm really envious of the speed at which you are progressing; it would take me six months to do what you've done in just the last couple of weeks! Can't wait to see more.

Hi North Sea Now the hanger of the big Kirov would be a real , "get your teeth into" challenge .If you do forage out any pictures please post up a sample .

Hello John After 4 years on Kiev 6 weeks on the Daring Hanger seems to be quick but in the greater scheme of things it's about par for the course, for me, I like to mull over a project in advance before I put scalpel to styrene, just to ascertain where and how to approach the tasks in hand An example is the bridge interior, I have no real details of this even though I was let loose inside the place so that area will be almost invisible on the model. It's a pity because there is some interesting detail that would be worth including. Thanks for your interest.

I do not know if maybe you have watched this documentry "Building Britains Ultimate Warship" on Ch4 last year but there is alot of good building information that can obtained from watching especially at its about HMS Daring. Covered angles of the bridge layout of equipment, materials and detailling can ascertained from it i.e colour of carpet, phones, displays and who sits where, well worth studying in my humble opinion.

Very interesting bridge pictures.

When I was driving ships we didn't even have electronic calculators. No video screens (except the primitive radar repeaters), LEDs, anything. If you wanted to calculate a course you used a pencil on a Maneuvering Board (if you can remember one of these you are showing your age). Our status boards were Plexiglass sheets with a sailor using a grease pen to update information. And charts were paper. We did have the original version of the Global Positioning System (don't recall the name now) but it updated our position only about once every 90 minutes.

Times have changed!

Hi Andrew Thanks for your kind comments. I really can't say I will not be pleased when I can fold down the Hanger door { temporarily at least ] so I can get on with the rest of the Build . BUT I am enjoying messing around inside the hanger

Time for an up date ���.
Moving on from the crane {but returning later to the roof space}
I showed a picture of the fire fighting control position close to the hanger entrance. Well that is the focus of our attention. the first job in hand was to build the frame for the door tracks as the doors will spend most of their time tucked away at the top of the hanger and all of this will be exposed. .

The detail parts in the picture shown above are now added to the edge of the opening. .

The Roof is temporarily place into position over all the internal roof details just to ensure all is well before moving on to the next stage.

Each of the basic parts as seen in the above picture, including the cylinder and hose reel are measured, cut and prepared.

The parts for the cylinder and hose reel are assembled.

Measuring and cutting the pipe work is a little more problematic as the pipes have to marry in to a second cylinder mounted onto the walkway but trace a path around a square container above the fire control point.

Material for this pipe is copper tube and easily bent to shape.

One of the pipes is {brass 1mm OD} is teased in to shape and will be attached to the cylinder.

The entire assembly thus far.

The hose reel is an assembly on its own.
First each of the sides forming the reel where cut using a compass cutter

As only one face of the reel is exposed the locations for the circular outer ring of bolt heads was dilled using a pin vice
Here is that prepared exposed face of the reel with the remainder of the parts ready for assembly.

The inner section of the reel in fitted.

The two outer parts of the reel are brought together as one

The remainder of the fittings are added which include the centre spindle and the legs.
Just as a reminder I have placed the part completed reel with the picture of the original.
The hose {formed from black covered wire and the spray nozzle} will not be fitted until the hose reel is air brushed.

Now each of the parts constructed can be fitted into their respective locations. They do fit with out any further adjustments {I was surprised to say the least. ]

Well it�s about mid way through this "mini build" The next task is the fire suppressant system. These are easy to identify as they are painted red and have sprinklers at various points along the length of each pipe run. A number are sited in the roof space others just below the walkway.
The "main" feeder pipe is tracked along the top starboard side edge of the hanger and the and is made from 2mm brass tube. Lengths of 1mm OD brass tube are measured and shaped.
A 90degree bend is made on the left hand side; this will form the port sprinkler head.

Each one of the pipes are laid across the top of the roof assembly to locate their relative positions as per the pictures and join with the main feed pipe .Non of these are fixed .

In the centre of the pipe is a sprinkler head. This was formed from the same diameter of brass tube and fitted in to place. Having a system where by the each pipe can be removed allows further work on the pipe and the roof assembly {lighting is another example] at a later stage .


All the pipes need to be secured but in such away that they can be removed easily. The method used was to cut a section of styrene tube and the pipe slotted into place.

Just to gain a foretaste of how work on the hanger is progressing, from inside...........


Plenty of work in hand but the hanger is starting to take on the appearance of the hanger! Next task is to fit the air fume extraction system , beneath the walkways and in the roof space. !!!!

One quick question... Do those side doors open onto the RIB decks? Do you then need a different moulding for the RIB side of the door?
