I received some days ago the kit of U.S.N.S. Shughart and I ve started building it. so here s the progress so far after 4 days of work.

I ve done so many 1/700 a/c that it seems that i ve lost my skills in fast warship building.

Its a very nice and easy kit to build. The only bad thing is the lack of photos for this class of ships and the inadequate instructions.

Todays update.

Shughart's construction continues without major problems. I didn t like the ship s deck looking so empty so i have started to add JAGs containers from the Cimmaron kit plus some extra vehicles.

That looks like a fun kit to have, did it come with photo etch? You are a machine, I am still working on the Mount Whitney.

This is indeed a very fun kit to have building it is easy except the instructions and the lack of reference photos. Ships & Co have decided not to add any PE in their kits after the first couple ( Kilauea and Providence) as a cost saving measure.
Their future kits will satisfy all of you U.S. Navy fans and include several postwar carriers as well as several UNREP and auxiliary ships.

Today s update.

I have built the stern ramp support structure (sorry i don t know how its called in English) maybe kidcurrie 42 could help me in this.... The lack of good instructions as mentioned before has made it more difficult to put it together after lots of dryfitting and guessing I finally found where everything was supposed to go. I continued adding stuff to the deck of the ship The spares box helped me a lot in this as i had lots of extra M-2s, LAV-25s, M-901s, Humvees and trucks.

Today i added the lifeboats, the huge cranes, one of the two stacks on the kit plus the rest of the vehicles on the deck and the decals for the helo deck. The kit is almost complete (90% finished). Only minor additions have to be done mostly PE and smaller parts.





I hope that by tomorrow she ll be finished.

Thank you John i have admired your conversion/backdating of Cimmaron.Good job on that one.

Today I finally finished my Mount Whitney. This was the Trumpter Plastic version. One of my first resin models was the this ship from PitRoad. I felt that with the newer kit I can improve the ship. I am happy with the results and stripped the old resin one to be redone at another time.

I think it will be the Cimarron and start working on the CVN-71 kit I just got. Both kits look demanding for patients so they will be slow builds for sure. As for the CVN, I have never built one before, so the in itself will be a challenge. I also have on order a Cruiser to finish my Norfolk fleet set. I will be using one of the newer Dragon kits for that.

Superb work on your LCC-20 I can t wait to see your first carrier finished.
If you run into any problems during the construction feel free to ask John or me.
We should warn you though that once you start with carriers there no turning back. You ll want to make more nd more and more of them. No treatment for that.

FINISHED IN 8 DAYS!!! Well almost.... I do not have not have any PE nets (I have ordered a couple of GMM sets) so the kit isn t 100% complete.

Verdict.

I had the pleasure to add this kit to my collection. The kit is not perfect but its the only kit of any MSC Ro-Ro ship so unless you will scratchbuild it this is the only way to have it. The kit is easily buildable so the fact that the instructions sheet is not very helpful can be ignored if you have good photos (there are some available). The price for this kit is high especially if you pay in U.S.D. with the current Euro-$ exchange rate but the production of such a huge ship in resin costs a lot. Another negative thing is the lack of PE but you can use any USN postwar set for that. This brings the total construction. together with the extra vehicles i used and the containers close to 200 euros. This isn t very high for me since a carrier costs me the same amount of money with all its aftermarket sets.

Finally if your budget allows it then this ship is a must for U.S.N. postwar ships fans.

Thank you for the kind remarks. As for Carriers being contagious, just tell my wife. She likes the hobby, but the carriers are large ships and I will need more display room.

I like that Ro-Ro, but like you said by the time I pay for shipping and the kit. I could have a bunch of others. Time will tell and Ship's and Co look like they do nice work. HMMM maybe I can figure it out yet. When is my birthday?

I have also come to the conclusion I will start the AO-178 first, and work slowly on getting into the carrier. The main reason is that currently my workbench area has been occupied by a female pirate. (my Wife) She started her own business and is doing really well for us so I cannot complain about it. The funny thing is she feel guilty about taking over that area. That is it, her guilt my gain, maybe I can get another couple of kits.

Wife feeling guilty???? Looks like you re on the way to get both more display room and T-AKR-295.
