There are no real offerings in 1/350 asides from Tamiya's ("real" as in anything other than copies of Tamiya's kit). From what I've read, Tamiya's kit has a lot of inaccuracies due to its age.
If you are willing to wait, Fujimi will be putting out a 1/500 full hull Yamato, which will probably be the best one yet. It certainly seems to be very detailed.

I guess I'll just hope for someone else to come out with a new and improved kit in 1/350, unless I feel like breaking out the scratch plastic

I modified Tamiya's 1/350 Mushashi into what I consider to be an accurate and reasonably detailed representation of the Yamato in 1941 according to my read of the last available information on the ship. I used both Lion Roar and White Ensign PE sets, as well as Fukuya barrels, and Veteran model binoculars and search lights. I will venture to argue that a state-of-the-art kit release today by a top drawer manufacturer like Tamiya could not easily be built into something significantly more accurate or detailed then what I've accomplished. The total cost would not have been significantly different had I started from a state of the art kit. Furthermore, I would not have traded the 200 hours of enjoyment I got from researching, designing and building the enhancements and corrections for the ease of construction of a newer kit. As a result of the research I did to correct the deficiencies in the 30 year old Tamiya kit, I now know a hell of a lot more about this ship then I ever would have just robotically assembling a flawless kit.

You make a good point Chuck. I am finishing up a superdetailed Tamiya Bismarck (just passed 100 hours on the project), which included a great deal of research and scratch-building, though I could definitely have done more. The reason I was interested in the Yamato/Mushashi is because I am looking for something that will take less time and money. I've put nearly $400 into the Bismarck and I'd like to do my next battleship for $150 total, or less if possible. However, when I get the urge to go all out again, there is an old USS Missouri kit that is going to be given all the bells and whistles
As for that feeling of knowledge and accomplishment, I'm also amazed at how much I know about the Bismarck now. I start painting today, so the feeling of accomplishment isn't far off either!

Yea...as an impoverished graduate student that's a little beyond my budget...but once I reap the benefits of a regular paycheck I plan on making a boatload of aftermarket goodies standard (yes, pun intended). I think I'll just hold off on the Yamato until I can do it justice!

But it's not finished yet! It's getting very close, only the (2nd) scratch built main mast, the antenna wires and signal halyards, the railing around the edge of the main deck, and the boats davits around the periphery of the main deck remains to be installed. Given me another 3 more weeks or so.
BTW, the wooden deck is quite an amateurish job, and will be disappointing to look at.

well you did say by the end of the summer i won't rush you anymore i know well that stress when i'm trying to finish something on time to show the guys here every sunday. More than the way it looks i think committing yourself to do such complicated task and to finish it is what really matters Chuck, there'll be always a next time and i'm sure it'll be twice as better than your last work. you know what i'd like to do someday i know it sounds absurd and some ppl might think he is completely nuts but i'd like to build my own wooden deck for my Otaku Nagato. this is on my to-do-list. you'll be hearing from me when i get there.
Hi guys, sorry I'm late, but I'm here now. Time to start soaking up all your knowledge for my soon to be started Tamiya 1:350 waterlined Yamato. Extras aquired so-far WEM photo-etch, a full set of brass barrels and the wooden deck set. I'm not going to go overboard on her, just enough to make her fit in with the Hasegawa, Fujimi and Aoshima quality ships.
Last night, I read about 38 pages of this thread from the beginning and will try and catch up tonight.
I was depressed last night, so I rang lifeline. Got a call centre in
Afghanistan and told them I was suicidal.
They got all excited and asked if I could drive a truck.
Beautiful and stunning work so far...all of it. Can't wait to see the final result
I'm especially impressed with the weathering, it looks very appropriate for an IJN ship. I'll have to try to duplicate it myself when I try out a big IJN battleship. Unfortunately the Bismarck I'm modeling right now wasn't around long enough to get dirty so she'll be a pretty clean ship.

Currently, I'm also working on a Bismarck (from Hachette/Amati, 1/200), waiting on yard.
