As I don't have any new adjectives to throw out, I will re-use "superb" for those boats.

Usually, I don�t count parts, but this time I did get curious. The biggest boat has well over 150 individual parts in it, the smallest almost 60.
So in that last photo, I�m holding close to 1000 pieces in my hand�

Ok. That's way beyond AMS. Borderline insanity. But still exquisite.

Each one of Marijn's boats has more parts than a typical 1/350 scale submarine model kit x 5.

well, my mom declared me insane when looking at my 1/350 sub + crew when she visited last weekend. It's quite clear she has never seen your work Marijn

Well, in Belgium one is rather quickly declared insane. Some even use this to abandon their marriage. And to fight that verdict is often extremely difficult! So beware of your mom, Wouter!

Meanwhile, I scratchbuilt the yards of the Redoutable. I used aluminium again to keep them light but strong. Only on the boomkins I used brass (these don�t need to be light), and for the stun�sail booms I used plastic (they don�t need to be strong, because no rigging is attached).



I tried to give the impression of the stun�sail booms �lying� in their irons, instead of being clamped by them, by gluing them to the bottom of slightly oversized rings (sliced from aluminium tubing).
The stun�sail booms will be left detached until after painting and preliminary rigging of the yards (hence the blobs of Blu Tack). The connection between the boom iron �rings� and the yards will be added only at that time.



The square elements on the yardarms were made from Magic Sculp. A blob of putty was left to harden around the yard, then sanded and carved to shape.


The spanker boom and gaff had their jaws shaped in-situ too. First, oversized plastic pieces were glued in place:


Then the insides were filed to fit to the mizzen mast:


And finally their outsides were carved and sanded to size/shape. I found out this needs a soft touch, as I did have to re-attach some pieces more than once�

I had already built the more complicated pieces of mast floating in the sea earlier. But now I also built the smaller pieces of debris and shaped them like parts of masts and yards. Much smaller debris (splinters, pieces of planks, etc.) will follow later.


The overall picture is starting to get pretty complete now�

One has to always remind oneself how small all this is ...

Personally, I would have probably made the yards and booms from steel or brass with bits soldered on. Your dexterity with styrene is always impressive !

Took me a minute or two to comprehend that you said the mizzen mast is only 2mm. I was thinking you meant the boom first!

What do you think of the belaying pins you see in the background? Guess what diameter these have?

Surely a show-stopper wherever this slugfest happens to turn up, even at this stage...

I don't have to guess. They are 0,2mm brass rod.
That boom is 0,9mm at its thickest, but that is near the centre of the boom. At the mast end, it is about 0,7mm.

yeah, that's just gobsmacking again. And indeed, even with the matchstick in some photos we tend to forget how large this is...I can only imagine that in the flesh the shear size (or absence of it) is even more impressive.

Meanwhile I need some surgery, time and time again my chin dropped fast and hard on the floor when I check each and every update
