Calling all Yamato (大和) and Musashi (武蔵) fans

Well hopefully I won't be shot for heresy, but next up is Revell's highly-praised 1:48 F-15E Strike Eagle. I've only built one plane since I was a kid and that wasn't very good, so I'm hoping to test out my improved modeling skills. It will be nice to take it easy after spending well over 100 hours researching, scratch-building, and assembling PE for the Bismarck though!

Final pics for the "until now work" (9 months): everything is in place but not glued yet. It's time to return to work ( ). I'll be out, in Florence, for a couple of weeks, then I'll see you soon.

Next steps:
fix mistakes on deck planking
wash the deck (very light grey)
start to work on secondary 15,5cm nendo shiki guns
work platforms on main guns
gun barrels muzzles (canvas, I think)
complete type 96 shiki triple 25mm aa guns with and without shield
waterway/scuppers on wooden deck

I don't know yet if fitting out the 1944 "Sho" operation or the "final" one: I "love" this battleship, and the final fitting let me sadly think that it'll never return home...

I have a feeling if you're going for a '44 fitting, you'll have to make some alterations to B Turret of the 46cm battery - you're missing the turret-top AA platforms.

Still, she's coming along quite beautifully.

Maybe you're right Sauragnmon, but neither AOTS on page 84 nor Super Illustration provide for that turret-top AA platform. I'll check with other sources. Thanks anyway, much appreciated.

I will need your help to build a dio for this 1/200 Yamato

I've been 'sitting' on a 1:200 Yamato, Akizuki and Shiranui with all the goodies for quite a few years now and my intention is to waterline the 3 and mount them in some sort of dio. Looks like a huge contract, but then again, I'm pretty use to large bases now.
BTW Does anybody make 1:200 figures?

Nevermind, I just grabbed this lot of 360 painted figures off Ebay for $10 Aust. I probably won't be able to use a third of them, but once dressed in IJN uniforms, they just might do the trick.

If you want to depict her as for Sho-Go, her deck was stained in dark grey (As Musashi's). Crew has used stack soot for this purpose, giving a somewhat irregular dark grey pattern to her deck.

I looked at those 1:200 Preiser figures and came to the conclusion they must be made out of solid gold. 1 packet of 190 unpainted (so they should be), - �30.87 or part #80909 - 6 x Mechanics for $18.00 US ect. Bloody hell, you could get 6 real mechanics in some 3rd world country for that price. I think I'll take my chances on the surprise bag of twice as many for a sixth of the price.

You're right, but I know only Preiser figures in that scale.

Here are some photos of Tamiya 1/350 Yamato I've been working on. The objective of the project was to produce a model of the Yamato in her as-built configuration, seen in a famous photo set taken during her builder's trials.

To back date the model from Tamiya's notion of Yamato's 1945 configuration to her actual 1941 configuration involved substantially rebuilding the lower 4 levels of the superstructure from scratch, deleting various alterations made to the tower bridge over the ship's life, removing the numerous AA guns added during the ship's career, and adding back the wing 6" turrets removed in an early 1944 refit.

I started working on the model in May of 2007. I've worked on it on and off, concurrently with 8 other projects. There was one major false start when I realized that I've accumulated too many errors and needed to start anew from scratch. This proved a blessing in disguise as it provided me with a spare pair of 6" turrets I needed to back date the ship, and numerous spare parts on which to experiment with techniques to improve basic kit parts.

AS shown in the photos the model is about 90% complete. Still missing are the rigging, deck edge railing, deck edge boat derricks, and minor deck furniture like hose reels, paravane fairleads and deck winches. The anchor has been unrigged so proper deck stoppers for the anchor chains may be added.

I will post more pictures as the model approach completion. I will also compile a complete list of alterations to the kit I deemed necessary to back date the Tamiya kit into an accurate representation of the ship in 1941.
