The next stage is to make and fit all the crash barriers around the after part
of the flight deck . This photo shows that not all are the same, which
complicates construction.Also to reduce having to return to the same part
of the build fittings willbe added were necessary .

As each barrier is to be soldered then covered in mesh I thought it would be
beneficial to make all those rails that are the same size and shape in two hits
on the soldering board . The basic frame is made up from .45 brass wire
First I marked out 6 of the barriers .

Next a bending profile is made from styrene .


Each basic frame is laid out on the drawing and the centre horizontal rail
added. At this stage the depth of the verticals is not important , this can cut later.

Preparation for soldering .The middle rail of .31 is added but in one length .
This will be trimmed later . The lower rail is added later

Hi Mick The barriers on each ship are of course slightly different but serves the same purpose. Alas Kiev changed the type more than once which complicates things a bit. On Kiev the barriers right aft on the stern differ from those along the sides, right aft

Each of the joints are soldered

The tape holding the job in place is removed.

The �string� of barriers can be lifted from the board.

All the barriers are separated from the string.


This is the basic form with a lower horizontal and a further two vertical bars
to be added { stern barriers only} But before this can undertaken the height
and spacing needs to be determined and this can only be done once the stern
barrier support is in place.

To order to secure each of the barriers to the stern edge a very narrow platform
was fitted as per the photo and set slightly lower than the deck edge.

This platform is constructed from evergreen strip 3mm x2mm sq .

Once fitted into place , each of the five barriers were laid out and adjusted
to suit the length of the narrow platform .

The exact positions of each vertical bar are marked and drilled. On Kiev the barriers
can all be lowered together. This could have been done with out to much of a
problem on the model but it�s finding the method by which the barriers can be
kept in the vertical .

The lower bar is added to the string of barriers .

As before each of the barriers are separated from the string.

A further two vertical bars are added.

With all five barriers prepared , the next stage is to add the barrier supports

With the barrier supports completed , each barrier can be slotted into position
thus.

Now for the remainder of the barriers and detail on port and starboard platforms
right aft.

Many thanks for your very kind comments. From the beginning of this thread it has been my endeavour and hope that I show, as ARH says "warts and all� so the methodology comes through. If any modeler can make use of any aspects of the build then I'm happy. Like all the builds on the board each one shown encourages others. What is rewarding is that each individual modeler showing their build adds to the pool of new knowledge that helps us all. As they say you never stop learning. I've seen such wonderful builds over the years, taking shape on this board that it helps to fire me up and hopefully improve my own building techniques and skill base.

A very quick question from a bit of a novice with styrene - whats your favorite method to bend it into curves?

This depends on the radius of the curve and the thickness of the styrene sheet. If it�s a small curve I�ll ease the styrene strip around a suitably sized tube. If it's a larger radius, for example a section of superstructure I usually apply a little gentle heat and "role� the curve either coaxing it with my thumbs or physically rolling the curve with a roller. With practice any radius can be formed. Hope this helps

I've used the trick of wrapping styrene around a brass tube of the appropriate diameter, taping it in place, and dipping the whole thing in hot water- then allow to cool while still attached to the brass tube mandrel.

You know what -I'd have never thought of that!

Hi Herbieham Hopefully I'll have some pictures up over the weekend. Concentrating on the detail around the deck edge platforms and the small detail , vents etc around the top of the hull. Thanks for asking .

Peter this is stunning work you have done , I only hope the model lives up to the work you have put in on the deck. I have had my nose to the grind stone , so to speak for the past 5 weeks so I can prepare for the deck .Lot of work has been done and when I get a chance and surface for some fresh air I'll post some construction pictures on the board.

Thanks for your kind comments , I'll be posting shortly .lots of small bits to be shown but I find that it's these that make up the bulk of the model
