Despy,

Some boats were 170 m while others were 173 m. The difference entirely depends on the length of the flat projection between the aft planes (what we used to call a "beaver tail" when Naval Intelligence thought it was a control surface). I wouldn't be troubled with slight issues in length when there are far more significant issues with the Hobby Boss kit, which you mentioned in your comment. I would recommend the Mikro-Mir Typhoon, which has serious problems in terms of joining the hull together, but is very accurate. Here are some very accurate plans that you can reference:

Also, if you haven't seen it, this album I made a while ago provides some good photos for model-making:

Thanks Jacob for the drawings. And yes I've already discovered your album about Typhoon and I believe it is the best collected source for the Typhoon. I even suggested your album in Britmodeller site.

Back to Typhoon drawing. My plan was to scratch build a typhoon class in 1/144 gigantic scale.
So to have a base to build upon, as I thought the linked above drawing was the only official drawing, I've drew it an AutoCAD file. I should say that even in that same drawing, there are some inconsistencies. The sections and x and y plan drawings were not perfectly matching. Anyway, in such cases, I decided a middle way to match as much as possible to the plan drawings.
And I scaled the drawing to match 175 m. Now it seems it's a mistake.
When I scaled it down to compare that drawing with HobbyBoss release I discovered some differences (but please note that it was scaled for 175 m, so the basic is slightly wrong):

The conning tower is way too big towards fore. The missile launchers' location is wrong

The flat area around the conning tower is too big,

Jacob, the plans you've shared seems spot on with the real thing. Here it is:

and in this case, the HobbyBoss one is really very close. I'll take picture with the scaled print out with the model soon.

Comparing the drawing Jacob provided with HobbyBoss, it is not very very bad.
The fore flat area is a little pushed forward

But it fits far better than the previous drawing.

I see the comparisons for the Hobbyboss Typhoon...has anyone looked at the accuracy of the MikroMir one yet?

Thanks!

There's a brief review of the MikroMir kit on page 32.

Thanks for the pointer! Really waffling on which Typhoon would be the better purchase-

I think it depends on how experienced you are at model making. The Mikro-Mir kit is great, but boy are those seams a nightmare. The Hobby Boss kit is probably miles easier, but at the expense of accuracy. (why not both Hobby Boss? how hard can it be to make an accurate model?)

Ah yes, that photo was taken on Navy Day in Severomorsk in late July of last year. The submarines are (from back to front) a Kilo, Yuri Dolgorukiy (a Borei SSBN) and NizhnIy Novgorod (a Sierra II SSN). Here are a few more photos. http://imgur.com/a/GZX9s

Does anyone have any idea on the accuracy of the Admiralty modelworks vs Mikro-mir Foxtrot?

They seem to be about even in terms of accuracy. The Admiralty kit has recessed sonar windows on the sail when they really should be flush (easily fixed with putty), but it has an extra hump on the deck on the port side of the sail that I don't see on the Mikromir kit. I think the big difference is in quality and price. You pay three or four times more for the Admiralty foxtrot, but it looks like a beautiful and easy kit. The Mikromir kits are much more work than a good resin kit, although I have not had much issue with the kits that have the hull split vertically like the Foxtrot and the early US boats. The subs with body-of-revolution hulls and horizontally split hulls are much more of a challenge.

I got a reply back from Boris at Polar Bear, he sent me an updated price list and it looks like my process of collecting 1/350 subs is going to keep going for awhile!
