I used Northeast scale lumber's 0.8mm wooden strips. Their widths are actually still overscale, but less obviously so than some other widths I could have chosen. The flip side with using strips so thin and narrow is the quality control at NW scale is not good enough to ensure the strips are of uniform width and thickness, so some times I had to fit a strip in edge wise so as to make up for the gaps that resulted from strips that fitted ended to end but were not of quite the same width. Also extensive sanding was needed because the strips were not all of the same thickness, so in a slant light the unevenness of the planked surface became quite obvious.

i built it back in 07 http://www.modelshipgallery.com/gallery ... index.html she has plenty.. let me rephrase it she has tons of inaccuracies  the paint job done on her was real crappy too, what kind i say at the time i was 3 times inexperienced than i'm now :lol_spit_1: you know what i've taught myself in the last year or so? i've taught myself to be patient. i hate to slack you know but when you take your time to consider the choices you got or how to start up on something it helps alot. My next Yamato will be done someday, who knows if after i'm fed up of 1/350 scales i go for the big Nichimo boy, i've been considering this for a while now i got some money coming in and i might do it and well go big, real big this time..

Thanks for the link, Jose.
I agree with you about the patience that in junction with the experience produces better works. My first models also had (and the current ones have) tons of inaccuracies, but the forums like this help to know people like you (always willing to help) and to share different experiences also and, as a result, to increase everyone's skills. Thanks again for your kindness :thumbs_up_1: :thumbs_up_1:

Maybe someone can help me on this since I can find no information on it in any of my books, on Yamato and Musashi, what are the massive rectangles on both sides of the stern that are located underneath the catapults? What is the purpose of them and were they ever used?

Thanks

Those would be the boat crane access chutes. The boats were stored internally, and the cranes were operated down tracks into the bay and then lowered into the water from there.

Did Yamato have the platforms and such connected to the main barrels for Operation Ten-Go or were they just smooth to the blast bags like on the 1:10 Kure Museum model?

platforms and such were removed for Ten-Go. Only blast bags were attached to main barrels.

Thank :censored_2: for that. I added the metal barrel to the blast bag on one, then added the two platforms before I knocked off for the day, then later while going over the photo's of the Kure model, noticed they were clean. This is going to save a lot of blood, sweat and swearing, thanks Gilbert.

Jose:

Thanks for the encouragement. Where is my beer?

The 13mm MG are from the Lion Roar single and double 25mm AA PE set. The 13mm MG are not always advertised with the 25mm MGs, but they are there.

I think you are talking about the jury rudder. The boat chutes were located further forward then the catapults.

The jury rudders were emergency devices used to give the ship steering control if the main rudder was disabled. The were built up from massive wooden planks and shaped like very thick barn doors. These were normally stowed above water in cradles against the hull side near the stern, and lowered into water for use if the main rudder was disabled. Around 1985-2000, it was popular in Japanese models to show jury rudders on both Yamato and Musashi, as well as many other Japanese battleships, carriers, and cruisers taking part in operations after 1943. But most recent models of IJN ships of the same period do not show jury rudders. So perhaps more recent research cast doubt on just how common these jury rudders were. Certainly more recent model of Yamato and Musashi do not show jury rudders.

Put it on my tab Chuck :heh: i should've ordered one set of single MGs instead of 2 dual and triple, thing is the sets i got must be old because i don't see any 13 mm MGs in it, next time... thanks Chuck

Thanks. Here are some more photos. Notice the unevenness of the planked deck. The antenna support on top of the 6" turret is built to rotate like on the real ship. In the photo it is skewed because currently no antenna aerial has been rigged to keep it straight. One 25mm mount is missing. It was dropped somewhere and a replacement need to be made.

Image

Lion Roar's aircraft crane and catapults are real gems. They are not only accurate and detailed, they actually take a lot more trouble than anyone else's PE parts to reproduce many of the separate working parts inside in 3D instead of just as 2D patterns on a single PE sheet.

Image

Another shot of the wooden deck. The slanted lighting here also shows up the uneveness of the planks. I did not remove the deck details prior to planking the deck. Instead I planked around the details, using edge pieces like they would on a real ship. This additional work added little to the appearance of the result but increased greatly the tedium of the work. So I probably won't try it again. The ventilators behind the breakwater are not as accurate as could be. They actually straddle the breakwater rather than rest behind the break water. But they are far more accurate than Tamiya's original.

Image

I accepted the Kure interpretation of the ship's stern, with a prominent towing fairlead, over more recent interpretations which suggested the ship carried either depth charges or aircraft fuel drums on jettison racks at the extreme stern. I also accepted the kure interpretation of the boat tube doors and traveling crane overhang.

Nice work, my near-favorite configuration too (I'd prefer some open 25mm on the main deck near the wing turrets). Are you going to add some washes etc?

Thanks.

I thought about building her in 1943 configuration with 4 open 25mm mounts around the wing turrets. But the sources are conflicted about her radar configuration, modifications to superstructures, whether she carried the tripod antenna mast over the aircraft crane, and whether her scuttles had been plated over. So I went all the way back to late 1941.

I will apply some kind of age coloring to make the deck a little more gray, and also seal it with some sealant. But to correct the bowing of some planks, I impregnated parts of the deck in very fluid CA glue. I am currently experimenting to determine what effect CA glue would have on various coloring and sealing agents.
