What kind of experience has anyone had with luckymodel.com? I placed an order with them, and I get that they probably have to get stock from small manufacturers, but I placed my order 24 days ago, and it is still marked "In progress" on their website. Should I be concerned?

Was the stock status listed as "Available" (blue) or "In stock" (green) when you ordered? The former is probably what it was - it means that the item is, as far as they know at the time of the status posting, available for order from the manufacturer/distributor, but is not in stock at LuckyModel's storage. Depending on the item, it can take them a while to acquire the ordered item. I always make sure to buy only In stock items, or items that I know are still in production and can be relatively quickly gotten.

I started my boat pockets based partly on the image above...Here's the basic shells of #1 and #2 mocked up...

I made the structures under the catwalk based on the plans:

pocket1_plan1.jpg

But after taking a close look at this picture, specifically the areas marked by the red arrows:
pocket1.jpg
It seems to me that the structures under the catwalks aren't structures at all. The upper arrow on the picture above points to an area where you can tell that the supports for the catwalk have empty space behind them...It seems to me that perhaps what the plans show is a grating on the deck of the boat pocket for ventilation purposes, and the only actual structure is the small square to the left on the plans which clearly shows a door. So now I have to tear out part of my work. :woo_hoo:

The other thing I noticed is that on the plans above, there is a square structure on the right outer part of the catwalk marked "Side Cleaner's Locker" The first picture I posted by Jon C Ryckert shows this structure going all the way from deck to overhead, but the plans only show it on the catwalk level...thoughts?

It's been awhile since I built that boatpocket. Not sure if I still have the plan that I used to make it. Are you making your drawings from the hnsa .org Booklet of General Plans web page? Just wondering if the date of your plans maybe different and showing a different fit of Lex. Hope I didn't screw up.

Im using the hnsa plans which still show the 8" turrets, so i guess the question is how much the basic structure of the pockets would have changed over time...would the catwalks and vents and whatnot have been modified when they installed the AA?

Think I have it figured out. Do you Warship Pictorial #33? Steve Wipers book has what changes were made to the ship just prior to the Battle of the Coral Sea. The box like structure that I have below the catwalk is a 20mm clipping room added along with the 20mm gun platform that extended out from the side of the shp at pocket #1.

Just got a message from Jon saying he had ordered the new Squadron at Sea Lex book on Amazon. It's a pre-order just now, releases the first of March, but thought some of you anal, such as Moi, people would like to know.

Fishing for information again. I'm trying to sort out the boat/20mm platform along the starboard side of the funnel. The Trumpeter kit melds this in at the same level as the quad 1.1's and ends it just aft of this space. They also carry it around to the rear deck which had housed the 8" guns and that is not correct and easily seen in pics and the plans. It is not at the same level and terminates just about where the funnel starts to curve around the back. The front of this is much harder to figure out. The plans show it continuing to the rear of the bridge. My quest is this:

Did this remain after the refit?

How was this difference in height treated?

The pic showing Lex at Ford island, either docked or passing to the shipyard seems to show it still in place but it's so dark it's hard to get any details.

Info anyone?

James,
Can't find my WP33 book and going by what I started to do, it appears that the platform stops near the forward 1.1 aa gun at the funnel and does not connect with the forward superstructure as there are a set of stairs going down at the front of the platform. . I am basing this on the early 1942 modification plans in WP33.

Thanks Jon. I missed that particular part as I had spent so much time looking at other sections. My bad.

Anybody know the size of the anchors that Lex carried? I thought they were 30,000lbs but could be wrong. TIA, Jon

Hi, new to the boards and wanted to ask something. so i am currently building lexington and doing a portion of the aircraft hanger. i was scrolling through the hnsa plans when i noticed something i hadn't seen before and i don't really know what it is. i was wondering if anybody here knew what it was...

since i don't have wp33, i was wondering if someone who does have to quickly look through it to find any info on this mysterious structure.

thanks in advance

Thanks!

To revive this tread on a positive note:
This book is out for sure, since I bought a copy.
I can't compare it to the other books, since I don't have them.

For a squadron book, this one is rather thick and complete. There are a lot of photographs, but of course the ones from after the '42 Pearl refit are scarce. The NARA barge foto is in it in good quality though, and some interesting pics during the removal of the 8" turrets.
I only wish there were some more pics during Coral Sea, most notably the famous full starboard view and the view on the front flight deck with crew and fire hoses, next to maybe some more of the crew abandoning ship. And of course some more text would be welcome, but Squadron's concept is of course to focus on the pics.
All in all, a very worthwhile buy though, affordable, and readily available in print: good stuff!

And some more info:

Eduard released a PE set for an 1/700th Lex.
Notably, it does have the crane (which looks good) and the degaussing cable.

An odd question...

When refueling aircraft on the flight deck, where does the refuel hose come from? I saw a small clip of planes getting refueled on deck and it appeared that the hose came from behind a forward sponson, then over the edge of the deck.

Tracy answered....

Nice model!

Unfortunately, I have no idea.

I do have a related question though: where would the firehoses come from?

If you look at the plans you will see that the drawing with the solid lines is the deck above where the boat sits. The area in question you will see on the plans that it say's "ARCH" This area on the catwalk above the boat deck is a solid bulkhead with no hatch but an archway cut into the wall to pass through. The archway is probably cut like a hatch opening with "knee nocker" but with out hatch "door" because it say's "ARCH" and has no door symbol. The only reason for this usually is the area is load bearing. Probably weight from the deck above and the flight deck. On the plan underneath that wall with an arch way you see two vents. One on each side. In between those vents is a wall right underneath the wall above on the catwalk. and the triangular thing you see in front is a support to help support the weight from above and keeping the catwalk from sagging. They take an I beam and weld it underneath and slap the triangular piece of metal on there as a support where the I beam and deck above meet. Don't remember hat its called but used to do it all the time hen building houses with the beams underneath that support the floor if the house had a crawl space. Also the circles on the plan in the walls are where the portholes where.

While constructing my Lex for a 1/700th diorama on her crew abandoning ship and being picked up by Morris, I have two questions about the rafts:

How would they have been attached to the sides of the funnel?

And how were they put in the water when abandoning ship?
In the next pic, it looks like one is lowerd by a line just forward of the 20mm gallery, but is this correct?

Many thanks,

How the rafts were attached can be made out in these Saratoga photos:
http://www.navsource.org/archives/02/020343g.jpg
http://www.navsource.org/archives/02/020359.gif

But if you are doing Lexington right, don't forget that she had a row of rafts on the inboard side of the funnel as well as on the outboard. Trumpy didn't put them in their kit. Because there were no ammo dumb-waiters on the inboard side of the stack, there were no gaps in the rafts like on the outboard side. The aftermost rafts can be made out in this photo of Lex at Coral Sea:
http://www.navsource.org/archives/02/020234.jpg

You can also see this row of rafts in the pics on pages 24 and 25 of Steve Wiper's Lexington pictorial. (#33) In April of '42, Lex had the rafts added on the outboard side. These were new rafts, not the ones inboard being moved to the outboard side.

Many thanks Dick J!

That is exactly what I was looking for!
I was aware of the rafts on the inside of the funnel, but never spotted them in the pic you linked to.
There were also many smaller rafts hanging in the safety nets, as can be seen on the bottom right of page 94 of the new Squadron at sea book.

Any idea how they would normally be put to water? Would they be lowered by a line like I think I see in the phtograph above, or would they be simply thrown down? Was there any "manual" for their use?

Many thanks!
