Brilliant! thats the photo I've been trying to find!! so many of the best books are now either out of print or so damn hard to find!
Oh, on another thought.... the bridge deck abaft the bridge shelter... is it at all possible that the germans would have used linoleum to cover the after part of the deck if they didn't replace the gratings there?? not sure on common german practices but i would solve the problem of slippage on a bare steel deck.

No. Painted steel with gratings, but not linoleum.

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
This is brilliant!! Much better here than on Antons build thread!!
So, If bismarcks catapult was replaced with Tirpitz' catapult could it be that the original Bismarck catapult had the catwalk and the tirpitz one didn't or vice versa?
I guess it depends on the catapult crews really.. Did they say,"I wish we'd had a catwalk on the catapult", so Tirpitz got one, or did they say," This catwalk is just in the way, what engineer designed this thing"!!!
Sorry about the drama here, but I really want to bottom this one out. I don't understand why therer are so many models and PE sets with the catwalk, yet all the pro's say it was never there??
I'm thinking I might add one to my kit, because it looks good in my opinion...Artistic licencse.

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
Tirpitz didn't have them due to the extension of the deck itself.
I think it was planned to have them on Bismarck but they never were installed. Hence why some plans show them. Keep in mind Bismarck wasn't truly finished when she left Norway, as it was a hasty start to get into the Atlantic. The cupolas were yet to be fitted on the aft rangefinders plus the upgrades to the 10.5cm guns which of course the Tirpitz received.

Another possibilty is that the catwalks were simply removable.

Here's a question for you then..... I think this is a Herr Nilsson and Olaf type question...
How many Arado's were on board when she sank, and what serial numbers were they??
As you probably know, I build 1/32 aircraft and have a Revell Arado in my stash. I would like to build it as one of the planes who went down with the almighty Bismarck.

You're hilarious!! If everyone answered questions in this way Forums would be a waste of time wouldn't they. Of course, I forgot, EVERY piece of information found on Google is accurate......

If everyone would ask questions on forums without spending the least amount of time trying to find an answer themselves, some people would be very busy and others wouldn't be at all. And if I am not mistaken, the first hit on google leads to a page with excellent information....

Thanks Anton,
I find it incredible that this detailed information is available, yet we can debate for days over a catwalk!!

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
Yet, this is a topic with experts, where people think will get a more credible answer, because wrong google information appears over and over. I would probably confirm any google search with the people here in this topic, regardless. I mean, for over two years wikipedia had an article about a war between portugal and india that didn't exist, and that of course generated google results and other websites.EJFoeth wrote:If everyone would ask questions on forums without spending the least amount of time trying to find an answer themselves, some people would be very busy and others wouldn't be at all. What really puzzles me is that while trying not to be busy giving straight answers we end up busy making funny gifs that take as much time. Why post at all?
I think it's great that some people come to these topics because THEY KNOW they will get proper information here, and are so used to relying on these topics they indeed don't even consider other options most of the times. I see that as prestige to this forum, others see it as bother.
And that's the end of my off-topic, I'm sorry to all.

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
True enough. But there are enough books and good websites where you can easily find the information. Which question sounds best to you:
1) According to this website (this one too)the numbers of the Arado are T3+IH, T3+AK,T3+DL, and T3+MK. Can anyone confirm?
Or
2) I need ID information. Please email me because I don't have much time to read this thread (can't even be bothered to search it). Thanks in advance.
If you cannot show you make an effort you cannot expect others to do it for you. With these basic things it's not really a problem but at a certain point information becomes more difficult to obtain and you rarely get it by sitting back and waiting. Also, information is copied without citing the source where credit is due (and hosting + making these websites is not trivial). You shouldn't tax the people who do know too much
It keeps the forum interactive, not reactive.
Perhaps I have had too much interaction with students
Sorry for the fuz....

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
To the model Bismarck gods:

Please be patient with us neophytes. I've spent far more time looking for info than actually building my Bismarck and I'm probably 60-70 hours into my superdetail build already! I'd venture that most of us who are seriously diving into a large scale Bismarck have done the same.
I honestly want to do the ship justice but I went into this knowing NOTHING about the Bismarck and let's be fair, WW2 German battleships are a fairly arcane subject in the first place (especially here in America!).
I can't justify the crazy prices being charged for the good but old out of print Bismarck books out there (I'd do unholy things to get a couple of them for a reasonable amount!), I don't speak a word of German and internet sources are sketchy at best. On top of that, the Trumpeter kit is clearly absolutely loaded with errors and omissions!
What is the point of such a forum in the first place if not to share facts and information so we can ALL build better model ships?
How many Arados the Bismarck carried is a completely legitimate question! If you are too high and mighty to answer basic questions then pass them up; this lessor being is certainly happy to share everything I've found out so far and I cruise the forum often. Otherwise I really DO appreciate the help... just not the snoot.

I would just like to say how much I enjoyed reading the last few threads. I was getting a little worried that asking on-topic questions on this forum was not the done thing...
As far as the books go Jason, I realise this book is an absolute fortune on Amazon, but it's available here for a reasonable price.. http://www.worldwar2books.co.uk/anatomy ... marck.html
See, I do research things

Re: Calling all DKM Bismarck & Tirpitz fans
Dear all,
Although rarely posting, I've been watching for several months with great interest, the various highly detailed Bismarck builts in this forum and thank you for valuable information shared.
I would much appreciate the experts' opinion/info on the following:
1.Studying several published pictures and 3d drawings on the bismarck as well as wreck video shoots, it appears to me that the width of the shelter bridge "wings" is greater that the width of the wings of the deck above; however ther is a discrepancy noted in the various drawings/3D images and plastic models. Can anyone enlighten us?
2.There is some equipment installed on top of the shelter bridge wings port & stbd; is there any info on the type/use of this installation?
3. It is apparent on some pictures that the firehoses and life rings are of a dark shade; is this shade orange or red or could be something different i.e grey? was the orange color used at that era for the lifesaving equipment?
Greetings to all
Christos
