Size comparison.

Great job on the DD. I don't like that design though. Normally the LNG's have the nickname of Iron at sea, because of their sloped sides. I think someone else will take that name now...

How big will this diorama be Neptune 1 sq meter or more ???

Depends, I'm making it flexible. I'm going to mount the cruisers on a similar size piece as well as the two tugboats. Also the Sovremenny and replenisher might be on the same size. Then I'll make a few seperate "waterpieces" so I can switch the ships from place to place. First it'll be on cardboard, then I'll fix it on wooden plates. This way I can also easily put them seperately on a shelf without taking a large area in the room/workshop.
Well, that's the plan of course... We'll see how it ends I guess....

Carl your diorama made me think about making one of my own. I m thinking of a 3-ship diorama "Operation Sea orbit" including CGN-9, CGN-25 and CVN-65.

The forefathers of the Nuclear Navy! That would be a stunning dio!

Don't forget the Nautilus, Nektarios. (or other early nuclear powered sub)

Or you could cheat and just put a periscope sticking up out of your diorama.

Yes after building 2 CGNs with full PE and a carrier with a scratchbuilt hangar, full PE, the airwing with SF decals i ll cheat with the Nautilus. It will save lots of time.

Nektarios, I'm affraid I don't have those videos. I only have a five minute one which was released shortly after the exercise. If you know a link to them, please send the link to me. They could be very useful in determining certain colours. (which was, for my SB-406 for the most part guessing and estimation from very tiny pictures). You can see the SB-406 in the picture I linked here, totally on the right, very small compared to the others.

Neptune unfortunately i can t remember where i downloaded these videos from but i could send you a dvd with these and more Russian navy videos if you send me your home or work addressin a PM or in my email.

Some photos of the work of my friend Mr. Maurizio Chiaro. His main area of interest are postwar U.S. Navy ships but in his collection you may find postwar Italian,JMSDF and Russian warships.

Guys, I have quite a specific question: I just ordered Trumpeter's 1/700 USS Roosevelt CVN-71. I would like to know what decals are provided for the airwing (Which squadrons)? How is their quality? If anyone could post a picture that would be terrific

Starfighter decals makes a CVW 8 sheet but it's for 2001 so that the Tomcatters (VFA-31) are not included.

I sent a PM to Nektarios as he is a CVN mass builder but I realized he built the Italeri CVN-71 so maybe he does not know (Except if he also bought Trumpy's, which would not be surprising )

I just ordered the decals from the Trumpeter kit from Hobby Link Japan and combined it with the Starfighter decals one.
The decals include the 2x8 Tomcat one for each sqn 4xS-3, 2xE-2, 4xEA-6 and 2xSH-60 .Their quality is good.

I do not have any photo of the decal sheet but here are some photos of CVW-8 2006. I hope this is helpful.

Thanks Nektarios. So basically you got the F-14 decals from Trumpeter and the F-18 decals from Starfighter?
I did not know that one can order just the decals of a kit: How much does it cost? Is HLJ the only source or do most on-line shops do it? Also, did you use the GMM Airwing set? I am not sure if it is a real plus as it is so tiny.

You re welcome. Yes you re right i combined these 2 sets

The cost was around 7 euros if i m not wrong. I only know that HLJ does this if other online shops do that i have no idea you should ask them. HLJ has an advantage on this kit. Pitroad produces the kit for the Japanese market and its easy to get the decal sheet.

I did not use the GMM PE airwing set but that was a time and money saving decision it didn t have to do with the quality of the set.
