The first job was to construct two identical lengths of wide track .
For this I used Evergreen 272 2mm I Beam . On Kiev all of these tracks
appear to be mounted on pads or small sleepers which seem to be a
combination of metal and timber . This effect was achieved by cutting a
series of slots using a suitably sized box file and adding styrene pads into
each of the slots. The two identical lengths will run either side of a centre
track .




The continuous centre track is made from 1mm sq styrene raised clear of the
deck by a series of pads . At various intervals side sections are added .
On Kiev these sections are bolted to the deck .



With the two types of rail completed these could then be laid out on the pre
marked deck. The two outer rails are formed using the same method as the
single centre rail minus the side sections.


There are more rails to be added plus deck fittings That�s for next time.

Hi Ron I couldn't correct the photo yet again and to answer Roels question
I'm having to revert back to the old picture . All I need now are 1:144
Russian sailors and I could add the guy enjoying a spot of sun tanning ,
I'm hoping to get 50 or so 1:144 scale naval aviation figures and deck
vehicles at Dortmund .

Hi Roel I understood that this was the hatch that was used to load the
SS-N-12s on to the cradle? Incidentally I've not seen ANY photos of
this process being undertaken but I'll keep searching. Thank you both

Sorry, my bad. Indeed, another hatch. However, the question remains how they did it. Never saw them do it at sea, and still have serious doubts. Haven't seen any other Soviet ship reload any SSM's at sea. From what I've seen up till now they always use the cranes to put the prams in place, it's like that for reloading Slava, Nanuchka, Tarantul etc. Kirov I think too. Even if that pram can go upright, it would take something heavy to do it. I doubt that crane on the side of the ship is strong enough to do the job. I'd actually think that crane is only used for reloading the SAM's given the size of the crane.
You could of course be correct, but it's strange that we've never seen the pram on the rails at sea, nor any reloading there. In reality I think maybe their heavy replenishers had the pram with the missile onboard and then put it on the rails with a heavy crane.

Hi Roel You may be right about the crane . I found this photo of the Baku
with SS-N-12 loading pram . Like you I have never seen it on Kiev and I
doubt if it could be used at sea? .

Replacing the major forward deck housings in order to add more track and
the deck fittings .

More rails are prepared.

The fore and aft rails set into place .

In order to get the measures and relative positions correct for the smaller
deck fittings which abound the area the SS-N-12 launch tubes are temporarily
placed in position.

Sharp as ever I guess. I think I'll steal this method to put the rails on my Udaloy. Even in grey and white this ship looks already great. Can't wait to see more progress!

Sited on the deck on the outside of the outer athwartships rail are
a series of timber packing pieces , either in clusters of three or singularly .
Their purpose is not clear but it must in some way be associated with the
use of the SS-N-12 loading pram. These are formed from sections of
1.5mm styrene strip.

Part of the preparation for painting requires that the all the deck hatches need
to be made and fitted.
Close to the RBU 6000 is a single large hatch . This was made in three parts
from styrene with a series of handles added to the top

Before the handles are fitted a radius is formed around the top edge and
strengthening strips added to the sides as per the original .

The next job was to fabricate a number of smaller , spring operated deck hatches .
An example of the materials used before cutting to size are seen here.

Each basic hatch is cut to size along with the strips of styrene rod that will
form the spring and the flat strips to form the hinges and clip.

All the styrene shapes that will form each hatch are added to the strip of .50mm
styrene . The reason for this is to replicate the original which has a slightly
wider base section .
