Thanks for all these informations. I am sure the GMM set is great, I just meant I am not so sure if it is worth the work to use it on such tiny planes. There must be more PE parts than original plastic parts

I understand what you mean Arnobiz. I chose not to use these PE sets bacause i considered that it would take too much time to build all the airwings i want to build if i used them.

Hehe sure, but I promised my wife I would complete my CG-62 first. Something to do with the stack of models accumulating in the cupboard I guess

So I've been quite busy in the past days,

I'm pleased to have finished my USCG Bear, started last year. This Jag kit is very nice, very good detail. The only difficult thing was the white paint. This is also my first atempt at making water. I also worked on my Abrams, on the tracks. These are individual track links, about 600 parts for the tracks only.
The only bad news is my resin. There's something going wrong with it. Whether is does not cure, or it stick to the molds so hard that the modl is damaged. So the 1/350 tractors are canceled, until better days.
I suspect humidity plays a role in this problem, but I'm not a resin expert. I had not used the resin since april.

Is it not a bit odd to have all your Tomcats with open wings? I am not a carrier expert but I would think they avoid to do that to gain space.

I�m building the kit just out the box , too much tomcats with open wings
and the decals originals from the kit are terribles .. maybe my next carrier I will try with the starfighter decals ( cvn 65 )
I think that the tomcats just open wings , a few moments before take off
I belive..

Your CVN-71 looks great Pere , that is one thing i had hoped for when Trumpy released the F-14, that we would have the option of all having wings in the swept position.

Pere, I do not have the kit yet so I did not realize you can only build half the Tomcats with closed wings. http://www.1999.co.jp/dbimages/user/hob ... 583z18.jpg
It sucks, I ordered an additional box of F-14s so I will have 14 planes with open wings to fit on the deck
Is there any way to modify the wings?

Hiya Arno,
It should not be to difficult, just use one of the closed wing section as a guide to reshape the open version, a little filler or super glue should take care of any holes or gaps.
You could place a couple of the open winged F-14's in the hangar under maintenance.

Thanks John, I think the modified planes will be hidden in the hangar anyway
The only thing is that there will be less F-14 than I whished on the deck, but I'll fill the gaps with F-18s.

Thanks for the admiration on the photography. Sometimes I think that's why I'm building the models...........just so I can take the pictures of them.

You've probably built a lot of Spruance class DDs, right? Any Skywave / Dragon ones?

Have you ever noticed, delt with, or modified this feature on this kit? I'm building the Skywave USS Merrill DD-976 kit which I believe has a major flaw. The port side superstructure aft of the boat deck is wrong. The Merrill never had (as far as I can tell) a walkway from the boat deck to the helo deck, nor the "jet-out" section of bulkhead below the walkway. I haven't come across any other SPRUCANs with this feature, either.

I am ignoring this flaw and building it as is.

Another item with the kit is where the helo deck part slides under the hangar on the starboard side. The hangar deck was too, narrow and there is a large gap along the starboard inside bulkhead of the hangar. I added a strip of styrene to solve this issue.



I added the towed sonar cable openings (I'm assuming that's what they are.) to the stern and scraped off the molded in details on the angled bulkheads behind the aft gun turret mount and added appropriate doors and fire hose racks. I also added two antenna mount platforms at the corners of these same bulkheads.

I'll add two inclined ladders from the aft missile deck down to the gun turret deck after the painting is done and the warning circle decal is in place.

Hi Carl, I had the same problem with Dragon's Ticonderoga, the hull is way too wide, which leaves a 1.5mm wide (1/700) walkway around the superstructure when the superstructure should be in continuity with the hull... My solution was to sand down the hull until no difference remained. It worked well:

I had that same thing on my Vincennes model and I did the same thing you did. But I am talking about the elevated walkway in this position where you can walk straight from the boat deck to the helo deck. The Merrill's upper superstructure didn't meet flush with the hull in this place like a CG, and there is a thick "jet-out" or "step" where the bulkhead meets the deck.

I am cutting off the walkway but leaving the "jet-out" and we'll see how it looks, then.
