As much as I'd like to buy this kit, it just doesn't seem up to Gallery standards. Their New York and Iwo Jima look like much better kits. To me this seems like it's more of a Trumpeter kit. Maybe it's my eyes deceiving me.

As I understand it, the kit is a joint venture between Gallery(MRC) & Trumpeter. With Trumpeter doing most of the mold work. .. I'm sure there are others on this board that know more than me about that, & could tell you 100% for sure... I have the Gallery LHD-1 Wasp kit. Haven't started it yet. But it's an awesome kit!! Gonna try to get the LHD-7 Iwo Jima kit at some point, which I hear is better than the LHD-1 Wasp kit... As for Trumpeter. I have 2 of the 1/500 Nimitz Class CVN's (un built). One of which I'm probably gonna sell at some point. They seem to be not big on the details... I'm yet to see any of Trumpeter's 1/350 kits with my own eyes... I guess I'll see what the CV-11 kit has to offer, when it arrives at my door...

FYI, all of the Gallery Models kits are produced by Trumpeter as are the Merit International kits. Trumpeter sells these under their banner in Asia, Gallery Models sells the same kits under their banner in North America (ditto on the Merit brand), and some of the releases were sold in the EU under the Revell AG brand (I don't know if that will happen with Intrepid).
Hope that helps!

Pontos isn't going to be able to release a set until they have a copy of the model to work on....

That does explain things. I wish Hobby Boss would do this class, but I prefer Wasp or BHR.

Well after looking over the finished kit here i can see Trumpeter written all over it. For instance, the props look exactly like the Trump WWll Essex and sister models. The Gallery Wasp is in a class of it's own and this thing is not up to par with that no mater who's name is on it. Something is up with the bow that i just can't put my finger on it yet. It's pretty close but still lacking something, humm

I will get one and have to nurse it up to standards and back to health,,

This model is screaming for a serious update set... or maybe it's just me screaming. I want to build her as Ticonderoga. I have visions of a wood deck as well! Kim at Pontos said it would be a while before they could tackle it as they have some other projects they need to complete first. But that wasn't a commitment to take on the project so I would suggest those interested let Pontos know that they would like to see them do this one.

My plan was to do Tico as well and scribe the deck where it needs doing. Off with the dome and bow anchor even though I always liked the dome Tico never had one. Many other little changes too, bring it on.

Navsource should have a few more photos for you Tico builders soon. I'm going to build mine as Hancock, but for some wild reason brain farted when I was at NARA last month and pulled some Tico boxes. It was too late in the trip to pull any Hancock boxes, so I just scanned the 4-5 that were in that box and sent them to Fabio.

Keith,
What "dome" are you referring to? I'm in learning mode. :-)

I think Keith is referring to the Bow dome, Intrepid underwent Overhaul and modifications to ASW carrier Mar.10, 1962 - Apr.2, 1962 hence the need for the Bow anchor.

Those of you building other Essex class ships other then the Intrepid, what are your plans for air wing decals? I too would like to use the Intrepid kit to build another carrier, but don't know what to do about lack of air wing decals.

Thanks,
Erik

I believe Darren at Hawk Graphics hinted at a set....

Hi John looks like we got what we wanted. My J.F.K. is coming along slowly. Using your build as a guide. As far as Coral Sea l trash her. But I'm building her as in 1951. Still have the templates of the FDR build. Maybe Trumpy took a look at my 27c builds and got busy :heh: That's great that Mark is doing the airwing. Erik and I are doing CVA-34 so wil be hitting each other up on our builds. Good Times to be a flattop lover. Happy Modeling!
