Martin, given that you have not done a ton of work to the seascape, I wonder if you might be better off removing the ship from the base and installing her on a wooden one and redoing the seascape? You should be able to trim around the hull into the gel and take the ship off pretty easily, and then just blend any remaining gel on the hull into the new layer of gel and you are set.

Hmmm. Interesting idea. If I hadn't already railed the entire ship, I think I'd consider this, but I'm concerned my natural ham handedness would end up destroying her.

I ran into a similar issue with my Bainbridge's sea base. I ended up masking off the ship carefully and respraying the sea scape. I then utilized lighter shades around the hull to show bubbles under the surface, then cotton and whatnot. The paint covered up the nasty frosting and the sea base was saved. I then used gloss varnish to shine it up.

Just an option?

Thanks, but if I'm reading your post correctly, your problem was with the seascape? On mine, the frosting is actually on the model itself, not on the base. Hence my reluctance to try and remove it from the now dried gel.

I do appreciate everyone's feedback and ideas.

No worries - I appreciate the input.

After a test with brushing some Future on a small area of the ship, I liked the results enough to airbursh the whole thing with another coat of Future. It's not perfect, but it's better. I'm not going to risk any more Future, as I've got too much paint up build up on the model as it is.

After letting this dry for a few days, I'm going to take a crack at LIGHTLY airbrushing flat on it again. We shall see what happens...

"Don't give up the ship!" It's just too good looking and too well built. Hopefully the solution will be easy and straight-forward. Maybe all this trouble will turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

I had a hull seam pop on Saratoga the other day. In the words of Homer Simpson, "Doh!"

Wow...it's been over two months since I posted a photo. In that time, I've pretty much let Z-17 sit, with one exception - I did airbrush another coat of future in mid-November, which seemed to take care of MOST of the silvering. Since then, she's sat on a bookshelf. I did notice that the warp has pretty much corrected itself, and there is no discernible bend in the base. That's good news. Next step - when I get up the fortitude - is to airbrush a few lights coats of flat, and pray she doesn't silver again.

You've perfectly captured the look of a very handsome ship! Glad you were able to work through the silvering. It's a beautiful model.

She looks really good. I like the bit o' color that the lifeline wind breaks and the natural wood on the boats give to break up the gray.
