What do you think about the very upper Flag? Hoistet at a Gaff? White Ensign flyes at the lower Gaff i think. When the upper Flag (VA Holland�s) is only hoistet at some Cord, this would be a strange Way to rig. aye? I mean in this Case it would be fixed at the Antenna......

Hmm, you have a point. Although I haven't seen the upper gaff, the flag is probably hanging from something. Take a look at the last pic on this page:

Its strange that those antena are prescent in both photos. the first photo is in atonomy page 34 with coment " the Hood at scapa flow shortly before her loss, as spotted my Moldes. the second photo is in Bruce taylors biography (page208)saying its from autumn 1940 ??? So if they are antena of some sort they were their for a while, or the same ship is hiding behind Hood... It is strange that they are only visable in these two photos

The positions are different in the two photos. Also, the quality is not very good, it is possible that it is just a coincidence.

in the CFB Esquimalt Collection, Part 2, at the lowest Picture, as spotted by @foeth, it seems again indeed that there is a upper Gaff. This matters Thomas Schmidt is presumable right with his Rendering at this Point.

Is any Procedure known, valid for Ships while Mooring in Scapa? Is it possible there was any special Radio Instructions valid? I think about something like closed Radio Circles for Short ranges like used in Harbors. I dont know much about Radio Technic but, was those Installations able to be reduced down to a Level which was appropriate to the Usage at short Ranges? I imagine it would be surely a heavy Mess in the Air when the Radio Stations of tall Vessels blow the Tea out of the Harbor-Commanders Pot, just for ordering the Amount of Fuel or whatever they need.
Maybe i am completely off the Path with this.....just thinkin� loud.....

And if you dont mind me asking ? how did you recreate the ball and cone signalls on the main mast rigging ???

The Ball is from a Needle, like the red one.
This Picture was taken during a Try to use the Needle Heads as a Cone as well.





But it didnt work out well.
The Cone was Wood first, but its now reworked using Styrene/PVC scratched from some of Trumpeters Frames.
I only have a Picture from the wooden ones, but the Way to do was the same.



Maybe a bit overscaled, but ok so far i think.
I research about the Purposes of those Signals. I am almost sure its a Rudder Indicator.
There are some Pictures from Signals (single Cone, black, Top upwards) hoisted at the Foremast Halyard as well. I am not certain about its Purposes.
Anyone has a Idea?
