Hello, dear friends!

Today�s post is sent not from the shipyard in the basement, but from Mom�s pond - to see whether Renown is waterproof - and how much ballast to be added. At first, she is dry, even with no grease in the shafts. But she is a lightweight... I had to drop two of Grandpa�s lead-bars inside, so that the total weight will be approx. 42 Kilogrammes.
Porpulsion is working very effectively - sorry to the fish!!! So now almost everything is prepared for the trials...

Dear friends,

excuse my little time of silence here, at the end of October I wanted to post a reason�s pictute here but couldn�t manage...
Now I try to do it with two: the reason and the consequence - marriage and honeymoon in Zuidafrika.

Now, back in the job, works at Renown are continuing, p.ex. planking, thoughts on a smoke-generator and a turning-mechanism for A and B turrets... Hope I can post some pics of progress soon!

Hello from cold Dortmund! Winter is coming
Thanks to a hard and long working wife, work at the shipyard has started again, a very time consuming sort of - planking...
Additionally, I start thinking and working on the smoke-system: A little pc-ventilator, leading air to the both stacks with a smoke-generator under each and a brass tank for the liquid on the same level, placed inside the hangar.
I also try an upgrade of the turret mechanism. The up to now trials have ended disappointing: a littel gearbox with chaintransmission from B to A turned much too fast, ignoring the switches. A geared servo linked with chaintransmission caused the typical servo-tics and much to high speed. Now I am going to try the gearbox of the first attempt, attached onto an axle leading to the turrets and there working on snail gears - with end switches. Let�s see whether it�s going to work properly.

Hi Jochim catching up on your build. With your turret training mechanism have you thought of using servo gearing? It can be made to give the right training speed and has plenty of power to move the turret.

Joachim, allow me to congratulate you on your fine build of HMS RENOWN.

This comes from an old Kaapstadter, Claremont and Rondebosch 1942.

A model boat club colleague and myself are converting his current 1:72 scale HMS BARHAM (hull too long) into a 1942 1:72 (nominal) HMS RENOWN.

He built BARHAM over 20 years ago and feels that she is in need of upgrading, hence the decision to convert.

Many congratulations on your wedding as well, nice to see that you both chose the "old country" for your honeymoon.

Also nice to see is that your new bride permits you to continue your hobby, at which you achieve excellent results.

Due to high season in organtuning, works on Renown are proceeding slowly only. The basics of the turrets turning mechanics are done, at the lower end of the rear axis the cam for the switches is still missing. Once linked with all the cables ans switches, it won�t be looking that orderly any more, as I fear

Meanwhile, I�ve made two trunks for the smoke gas. They reach down to the deck and shall end on the upper cover of the windtunnel, where the two smoke generators will be placed. Here you find some pics of this preliminary state - later invisible being all internal....

Hello, dear friends!

A little progress can be announced: I�ve started planking the fo�c�sle... Shame, the prepared plankes will not be enough, so some more hours of cutting are already booked for next year.

Meanwhile, a miracle has happened: My next attempt to create a turning-mechanism for turrets A and B is working! The speed is almost realistic, only the noise is not. But I guess, later on the water it won�t be that bad

Today my Conrad-order has arrived, so in the much too short chrismas-holidays the funnels are intended to smoke for the first time. This is linked with a further experiment: I�d like to vary the cloud of smoke from small to full spead, so I�m going to try to control the both smoke generators with a simple controller for electric rc-planes (does only have to go stop and forward). So if xmas starts to become boring - up and away to the yard...
