I have a question? in the picture there a ship's system on stern aft deck area, in front of the Mk6 fanfair torp. decoy was wondering what this is, Iam guessing maybe a smoke generator based on location, and has a shield like the mk6 fanfair. ? anyone know ?

That is the ship's BT Winch and shield - most destroyers of the period carried one each of this and the Fanfare Decoy. If you notice there is just to the left of the red circle a small angular davit in the closed position along the lifelines - this was the BT davit which is swung out perpendicular to the hull and the "fish" is feed out from the end of the boom with a small dia. wire cable at a distance behind the ship to take samples. The extended boom keeps the "fish" from getting tangled up with the ship's propellers. The SONARmen were in charge of this equipment.

BT is short for Bathythermograph (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bathythermograph) - i.e., the "fish"

Hope this helps!

BB62vet answered the question,

will be adding this system to my two DD/DDGs still under construction, kinda fudge the size and shape, notice this system in a few online photos mostly was on all gun DD version or the DDGs, not see on the DDs that had the ASW MOD probably from lack of space with dipping sonar there, posting a photo show this in setup in reverse, meaning the BT is behind the fanfair instead of in front of it. the associated davit gives a clue that this system is there.

thanks you BB62vet, I have couple more questions ( anyone can answer) on the F.Sherman/Decatur(DDG Mod) : the life racks the color of the raft bungle/or canvas cover not sure what Iam looking at in the photos online, is this tied down or is there metal framing holding rafts in place ? next question the color of Tartar missile or Standard MR (warshot) not a training round, in mid 1970s ?

I was planing on using dark Olive drab for life rafts, and all white for Tartar missile with black tip

Thanks DavidP for your reply,

Timeframe of the DDG about 1976,(by 1976 aft spray shield reduced, has satcom square shape) based on online photos the ship has not recieved the container type life rafts yet, Iam referering to the type of racks that hold bungled up raft, this not the floater raft of WW2, looks like floater lifeboat mk3 or mk5 based on the size of the rectangle that was molded on the model about (5 ft L x 2ft W x 3ft H/ some are 4 ft W) the thicker locations means there two rafts in that rack. posting image for reference

Anyone known what this item is ? circled in the picture on the deck of level 2 deckhouse that between the smoke stacks, to me looks like something with shield around it, only see this on DDG 34, maybe DDG 33 not see this on the other two DDG 32 and DDG 31, my guess is aux generator exhaust ? or maybe type of Chaff launcher?

Perhaps the item behind the shield is a secondary conning station.

DavidP the photo that you posted looks like the compass station that was on the original F.Sherman class as built

Isn't it a shield to protect the main leg of the mast from a torpedo hitting it?

No - this photo shows the amidships (RAS) Replenishment at Sea station - note the ship to the side in the photo and the phone talker inside the RAS station. This photo was taken during replenishment operations. Also, the short upright mast with attachment loops is sort of a dead giveaway.

I can't determine what the item is in your original photo as it's too faint to make out. A secondary conn might be possible, but IMHO, doubtful.

could be the photo that DavidP posted be a compass and RAS station?

was looking at a Mitscher Class DASH conversion plans, It show a Compass and DASH antenna together with a shield, the Decatur class(F. Sherman conv to DDG) originally was to have DASH, aft Deckhouse has a DASH look to it.

Going to try to post a enlarged version the photo of the original question, another possibility is this a mk28 chaffroc ?
