Well there we go. Major progress nowadays.

I've finally gathered my courage and started painting the big block. One thing I noticed from the beginning, I should have painted the decks during construction and not now... It was a difficult job to mask everything properly, certainly for the swimming pool deck near the forward edges. However I did it and after some slight touch ups it looks ok.
I painted the pool and a lot of details, again some touch-ups are needed. Unfortunately the masking took off some paint, primer included, I'm not too happy with that, but I guess I'll have to live with it. I've re-painted that part already.
I left off the funnel in these pics so you can see the crowdy deck. None of the fittings have been glued in place so far. The goose neck on the starboard side will receive a smaller twin next to it as well.

have you tried painters masking tape? You can get very low adhesive tape. In Aus it is usually colored Blue or Green

I used Tamiya tape, half of the tape on the model and the other half to hold pieces of paper to cover the entire model.

impressive work! It is really coming along and starting to shape up into a quality build.

Here are probably the last ones before I leave again. Next holiday, during summer, I hope to continue and finish the hull. Not sure if I'll do anything onboard, probably just making plans and scetches for the deck equipment and lifeboats.

So, in the end I did decide to take my stuff with me and here are some results.
Most of it is only half finished because I did not take too much specialised equipment with me.

Mooring equipment:

Overview, the bollards all have two holes drilled near the base of the cylinders, a semi circle of wire will be inserted. This holds the first turns of the line down and avoids slipping.


A spring winch. I built two of them, one for forward, one aft. The other winches are double drum winches, but the sides have a bigger diameter (and the punch I needed was missing), so I couldn't make them yet. I did make the gearboxes for those winches.


And the horizontal pedestal rollers, they too will receive a small section of wire, which in reality holds the line up near the roller, even when the tension is gone.

And some general stuff.

The forepeak bosun store entry. It still needs to get some support frames which I intend to make from litho and some handles on the door as well.



And the four big dry powder stations. Each contains its own driving gas, powder tank and hose with gun.
They also need to receive some more details and they'll be painted red, giving some colour to the, otherwise grey, deck.

Hi Roel I thought well even a spell roving across the severn seas aint going to stop you doing a little modelling .You really can't keep a good model builder down , even at sea. Great job Roel .Progress might be slower than you would like but you are building a top class model.

Some more stuff:

The jig I made for stairs and also a stair made with this jig.
Practically I built up the jig by putting a few 2mm pieces above each other with a 0.5mm (steps) in between. All of that on a bottom plate.
Since my model has several heights and different angles, I decided to do it like that. The jig can now hold all my steps, all I have to do is take measurements from the superstructure to determin the angle of the stair. Once I have these, I can put the angled line on the jig and place the steps along that line. Once it has all the steps, I glue the side plate on them. When dry I can remove, carefully, the steps, which are attached to the side plate of the stair, out of the jig. All I have to do then is add the other side plate.





Furthermore here are the gas freeing fans. If a gas carrier has to go to dry dock, or change type of cargo in certain cases, the tanks have to be brought under ambient air. Each tank on Chaconia is equipped with two ventilation fans, with a steam heating system as well, to ventilate the tanks. A flexible tube is then brought from one or two of the small circles you see in front towards the tank entry hatches. As you can see there are 4 of the same fans and 2 different ones, the different ones are for the aft tank as they were flanked on the original design by a big deck tank. This way they had to be placed longitudinally rather than transversally like the others.
They are not yet entirely finished as I have to add small handles to the upper doors as well as some litho finish and the tubing for the steam heating system. The base for each fan has to be made in place on the deck as the deck is angled.





PS: thanks for the kind words both of you! Dave, believe it or not, I'm actually ahead of schedule. Hadn't expected to build anything during sailing, and I did. This has saved me a while, because repetitive works tends to get postpones when I'm at home. For this summer/vacation, I hope to get the hull finally finished and perhaps even in the water (although that would only be a plus).

Thanks Ron, coming from you, that really is a compliment. As you can see on my hull building method, you're the teacher on this one!

So I finally got back home, so work continues on the hull now. I'm using a sacrificial coat. One side is nearly finished with filling and sanding, the other along with the bottom needs some more work.

Shaping of the sharp lines around the bow and stern takes a while.

After a week of sanding and filling etc. the hull is nearly finished. I'm now ready to start with the rudder and the propellor is also ordered (could take a couple of weeks to arrive though).

Here is a lay-out with approximate positions of fittings as well as the unfinished deckhouse.


As you can see, there are still some small holes to be filled/sanded.
