In all honesty, I wouldn't mind doing Both of them, but respectively whiffed within an inch of their lives - I'd take Coverted Ise, with four 14" turrets, but I would move the CV deck to the midships area, and make the conversion there, including a few SAM launchers on the sides, and the CIWS in that position, effectively turning her into a BBGH with helicopters instead of seaplanes.

Hyuga I would go for a slightly different modification, retaining fore and aft turrets, but turning the midships section over towards a Strike package, ostensibly. A large battery of VLS, new stacks, CIWS mountings, etc.

But then, they say I'm crazy.

Dear Boys & Girls, I'd quite like to make a Hyuga or Ise in their original state......

Hi
I'm thinking of trying to finish my 1/700 Hyuga (1942) and just wanna check a couple of things. Was there any linoleum decks around the Pagoda? I've seen models with and without this. Also would the rangefinder/director atop the pagoda have been paint white at that time?
thanks

I thought the tall second tripod on Ise and Hyuga, along with their very cluttered arrangement of casemate guns, made them seem exceptionally unattractive for a super dreadnought. Both the precceding Fuso and succeeding Nagato classes were much better looking in their as-built state.

Hi

Would I be right in saying that in mid 1942 both ships would have had an aircraft complement of 3 'Daves'? If not can anyone please advise?

thanks

I've just noticed something as I started to fit the rigging to my 1/700 Hyuga. In the Hasegawa kit the top of the mainmast looks like some kinda wierd 3-pronged TV ariel - was this something fitted when she was converted into a battleship-carrier? My kit represents the kit in 1942 so I would have thought the top part of the mainmast would be a more traditional pole with a yardarm - am I correct?

thanks

Hyuga has the more traditional mainmast, Ise the one that looks like a TV antenna. The change was apparent as far back as 1936. Have a look.

Thanks Dan - the kit got it wrong - I've done it as the more traditional mast and have a lot of the rigging in place. I made the mast from some brass rod that was lying around.

thanks

Anyone knows if Ise (and Hyuga) had any double 25mm AA after her conversion to hybrid aircraft carrier ?
Thanks in advance.

Ise during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, taken from a USN aircraft. I neglected to write down the photo number, but it comes from the 80G record group. Thanks to Dan Kaplan for the ship ID.

Did Ise and Hyuga got her 2 catapults removed to clear arcs for number 3# and 4# turrets by late 1944 early 1945 ?
By the way, thanks Martin for the picture of Ise.

Hello Atma,
According to Nihon Kaigun website
Ise
"29 October-8 November 1944: (at Kure)
Two catapults aft are removed to improve the firing arcs of turrets No. 3 and No. 4."
Hyuga
"7 November 1944:
Arrives at Sasebo from Kure. The two Type 1 No. 2 Model 11 catapults aft are removed to improve the firing arcs of aft turrets No. 3 and No. 4."

Well IJN Ise and IJN Hyuga's main gun where the famous 14"/45 (35.6 cm) used on IJN Kongo and IJN Fuso calss too. Im wondering, is anyone on this board who had build(Dan ?) the new IJN Ise by Fujimi notice that the IJN Ise's main guns are better than used/manufactured by Fujimi on the previous 3 IJN Kongo class fast battleship(IJN Kongo, IJN Haruna and IJN Hiei) ? Im comparing them with metal ones from an aftrer market company wich I shall not name and there is no point to use those metal ones, really impressive work there by Fujimi.
Whats your opinion guys ?
Thanks in advance.

I thought Ise class had different main gun turret shape to Kongo class to begin with...Sure calibre's the same but a lot can be different on other places...If not mistaken guns on Fuso also differed from Ise (with Fuso having elevation difference?)

With the first of the Kongo class British build, since then Japan's been constantly improving their ship building tech, even though a lot is 'borrowed' from the Brits.

I wasnt talking about the gun turrets or the gun turret shape but about the barrels. They are tottaly new casting wich makes them even more better than the 3 previous IJN Kongo class (IJN Kongo. IJN Haruna, and IJN Hiei), by Fujimi
