Getting there. Just a quick look at the rear main deck/A-C deck, taped off and rails attached, save for the very stern. I'm breaking as many things as I am attaching them. Note missing jackstaff support & starboard propeller guard

Awesome as always Dan!
Have you ever considered using a liquid mask instead of tape? That is what I use, and find it faster to apply and get in all the nooks and crannies around deck objects.

Thx to all for your encouraging comments.
No, I've never considered using liquid mask. Interesting. I usually handbrush the smaller deck fittings as I do a fair amount of touch up anyway.

Sorry I wasn't very clear, I wasn't talking about the little details those I do paint by hand myself. I meant using the liquid mask to go around larger objects like a complex superstructure and the large circular turret bases. Seems like cuting and working with tape would be difficult, time consuming and expensive depending on how much tape is used.
I've been going over these photos a bit more closely and I LOVE what you've done with the back wall of the boat storage area, just under the aircraft deck. I see a vent, doors and several other details. Very insipring.

Re: Aoshima 1/700 Maya 1944 buildus interruptus
Progress continues, slowly. The main decks are now taped off, the bridge and HAG deck structure, excepting the upper bridge, have been glued in place, as has the #1 funnel.
Lots of seams were filled with Mr. Surfacer 1000, in lieu of the non-existant Tamiya putty. That meant alot of coats, and a lots of sanding. Seams were at the intersection of the HAG deck with the hull halves, and the lower front of the bridge face.
Both funnels are painted; #2 funnel is just sitting loose in its slot and will be removed during hull painting. The main mast will actually have the middle portion of black taped off in order to cover the top and bottom with gray paint.
Grab rails have been installed along the lower bridge faces; main deck forward & HAG deck railings have yet to be added.
Photos were taken quckly under low light, hence the usual grainy, blurried quality

I am tracking this workshop with the greater attention. it is possible much to learn and every spent minute on reading in the future will result in the best models.

Thx, all.
Jose, I think I've built all the binoculars I can stand. Please don't make me.

Would you use the new 12,7 cm AA from FineMolds Dan ?

I might have but, I've already assembled and painted six of the mounts from the PitRoad NE-01 set. They were the best until the FineMolds units were issued. Only 4 to a box, though.........at least the PitRoad set came with enough units (8).

Re: Aoshima 1/700 Maya 1944 buildus interruptus
Well, it's taken a while but I'm finally ready to paint. I had several details to add since the last posting. Among those, I scratchbuilt the torpedo loading davits placed next to the open middle bay, decided to use PE davits for the 9m boats at the forward end of the HAG deck so that I could hang the boats from the davits most easily, reworked some seams on the turrets, scratchbuilt two deck winches for the main deck as they're not really well represented in kit form (barely visible in the last photo as the two small, white styrene bits on the left side; one is between the two upper bridge levels).
And, in a nod to Jose, I installed two sets of binoculars and a compass binnnacle on the compass bridge level, which can barely be seen in the second photo.

Holy
Dan! All that detail into a 1/700 blows my mind every time! How did you tape the mast and not worry about all the PE details being pulled off with it?

Ryan, I'd love to say, no worries, it's just Photoshopped, there's no actual model there. If only....
Removing the tape takes a lot of patience and prayer. The Tamiya tape is low tack enough to separate easily if you apply gradual pressure. I'd have preferred not have so many components already in place but, there were several tradeoffs between painting more assemblies vs. painting a more complete model.
