WTB/WTT YMW Nimitz decals
Does anyone have any of the YMW 1/350 decals for the A-7 or F-14 squadrons that they'd be willing to part with? I can send a Money Order, or trade for some spare castings of original pattern 1/350 F-8, or RF-8 Crusaders that I have. I'm building a model on commission and need them within the next week, or so. Email at the address below to work out the details and postal addresses. Thanks for looking.

something diffrent but it belongs to this topic, I suppose.
Something which struck me, are the new releases of Trumpeter.
The F14B/D has some improvements and some bad faults. Like the canopies windshield, its not made from clear plastic??. The engines look oke, especially that particular detail alongside the enginering.
The TV nosepod and the droptanks.

The C2 seems to have better props, which I will be using for the E2.

The EA6B seems to have interior seats now, and God bless Trumpy, for the jammerpods /fueltanks, will there be a weaponset released in the future???

Timmy,
not true the forward part of the canopy is now modled in grey plastic on the upper half of the F14, which given the old F14 had the complete canopy in clear seems an odd choice.
Duncan how are you approaching this ?
I am going to use the new F14s and do the forward wind shield in silver with a black surround I think....
The rest of the F14 pack is much better however and fit seems better.

well Mark (and Timmy ofcourse if he is listening...)
I need the F14B/D tailrings, and this Cat does not come with a Beavertail and goes with struts.
I 'll probably cut the F14s B/D upper fuselage right there in the center.
I 'll do the same with the D version (I 've got these @home).
I am gonna combine B/D & D parts to come up with a descent looking Tomcat.
I don't get it why Trumpeter uses a clear canopy and a 'grey plastic' windshield..I bet something went very wrong and they might be feeling urged now to do a F14A+??
haha...
In your case I would paint the clear canopy from the inside/or out, same color you use for the windshield..I might even cut it off and would go for some F14D clear parts.
You buy some extra F14D boxes and improvide like that?
I still think Tamiya's F14 is the best, the sleek lines of the canopy design is perfect. Its still has a gun and ventral fins.
Trumpies planes aren't bad but if its true what you say Mark, the F14B/D has a much better fit, wel my 2 extra cents worth than.
Since I am still single and good looking, no wife bitchin me about spending too much money.
cheers Mate

The Tamiya 1/350 kit out of the box depicts the Big E in the early to mid 80's just after the overhaul where she got her new island. The correct airwing would be CVW-11.
VF-114 F-14A
VF-213 F-14A
VA-22 A-7E
VA-94 A-7E
VA-95 A-6E/KA-6D
VAW-117 E-2C
VAQ-133 EA-6B
VS-21 S-3A
HS-6 SH-3H
If you go with a 1982 time frame you could do the high viz markings. Not much later than that the navy went to the low viz schemes. This was the airwing from 1982 until she went to Norfolk for overhaul in 1990.
I would have to agree that the Trumpeter aircraft are a bit better than the Tamiya. The Tamiya Tomcats do not have the oversweep position that you would do for Tomcats parked on the flight deck. The Trumpeter sets do. The Trumpeter sets are all wings folded and the Tamiya sets are in flight positions. That saves a lot of time and heart ache with botched wing cuts when you are doing a whole airwing!
I built this kit in the 80s. It has survived all of the moves across the country and back with the navy. It is currently "in the yards" to get a 2006 time frame update, PE, and a new airwing with VFA-211 F/A-18Fs and the rest of CVW-1.

Re: Calling all USS CVN 65 Enterprise fans
Hi Guys,
I just read all of this thread. I am not a CVAN-65 expert, but I hope to be!
I am gathering information to aid those, (including myself), in an effort to backdate Tamiya's 1/350 Enterprise to any fit prior to 1980. I have a set of 1/350 Redux decals for CVW-14 1976-77; this would require backdating Tamiy's kit. This is doable! More info is needed. My preference; do an as commissioned BigE! I still have the National Geographic magazine with a 12 page article on Enterprise; date...March 1963.
I have gathered a number of Pre-80's pics of the BigE before her 1980-81 re-fit.
I have pics of Enterprise ranging from 1961-1977/78. So far I've discovered, (just by comparing photos and dates from captions), the following:
As commissioned, the mast atop the island had one yardarm; later two, (first re-fit mid-late 1964- June 1965).
As commissioned, the flight deck had three flight deck leading edge "horns". I thought originally these, "horns", were to catch the bridle from earlier style catapults, but did'nt Enterprise have steam cats? The angled deck edge, "horn", was removed some time in the mid-late 60's. I do have a pic or two where BigE has two yards and the third deck edge horn. Most pics I have with Enterpise showing the two-yards mast arrangement, the third leading edge horn is gone.
As commissioned, there were NO missile sponsons on either side of the hull forward.
Sidenote: Tamiya's clever engineers had the idea to hide the forward bow section attach screws beneath these sponsons; now they'll be uncovered.
As commissioned, I still have not determined every island detail, which is a must when determining where it began. Then and only then, will I be able to find and document changes. Prioritizing changes is another "modeler's prerogative", but I'd like to document as many physical detail changes as is possible.
Yard periods and the subsequent changes would be paramount information.
What changes and when is what I'm looking for.
No pun intended here, but I'm almost starting form "scratch"...!
I'd sure like some help guys!
Thanks in advance, Tony
ps I'm a roast...baste me!

Tony - Good luck with your project! I was poking around for sources, and found quite little on early E. As a matter of fact, I made some stupid mistakes on my build of Revell's old 1/720 carrier. I really have to learn to look at photos better. In any event, if you have that NG article, you're one up on me - all of my references came from the 'net. Matter of fact, I'll post pics of my build later this week.

Re: Calling all USS CVN 65 Enterprise fans
I've got the RoG 1/720 Enterprise inbound from the LHS. Can anyone tell me what aircraft come with it? My very tentative plan (more like a fantasy) is to build her as she appeared during Operation Sea Orbit, with the crew spelling out E=MC2 on deck.

Unfortunately, it looks like most of the air wing is on deck. There's another photo with fewer aircraft too...
