Some more CVN-78 WIP photos. I have finished the island to which i added several antennas and electronics (aftermarket stuff). Also i added more decals some of which are custom made by John( kidcurrie42 ).

Thanks for the side-by-side photo of the Arsenal Ship and the NJ. That really defines the relative size of the Arsenal Ship, for me.

Would the Arsenal Ship incorporate Aegis system? I know that you said that it wasn't intended to have much self-defense capabilities.

Here are some shots of my second modern USS Iowa attempt. I'm trying to make this Skywave modern USS Iowa kit more accurate and detailed.



The wooden deck pattern on the real Iowa was different than the NJ, which the Skywave kit depicts more so than the Iowa. I've had trouble with the aft deck seam and am scribing additional planking lines where there wasn't any to start with.

(a black wash was applied and then cleaned off, just to make the lines show up better for the photo)


The Skywave's hull actually dips at the deck seam line. Bummer! The almost identical Trumpeter kit didn't do this.



Here I have taken care of the deck seam and primed it. This is prior to re-scribing the planking lines, which I'm still doing at the moment.

So this build will be with full PE???

Only as much PE as I feel like. Some of the really tiny items, I usually pass on. I'm using GMM's modern NJ/Iowa class PE set.

Hi everyone,

I have just recently rediscovered my interest in modelling (after a 10 year or so drought:)) Back then I mainly built aircrafts but nowadays ships in 1/700 have really caught my interest. So after spending quite some time looking at various sites and forums I stumbled across this topic here and decided to sign up because this is pretty much dead-on exactly what I was looking for.

Basically, all I can do is just repeat what has been said many times before: amazing work! Needless to say especially Nektarios' work is quite impressive! I'm looking forward to learning one or two (or probably more) things from all you guys.

As to what I'm working myself... After having built an old Prinz Eugen kit for practice, I got myself the USS Monterey from Dragon and Trumpeter's Nimitz 2005 kit. Coincidentally, I came across the documentary/series "Carrier" which was filmed aboard the Nimitz' 2005 deployment. With that I knew what I'd like to build: CSG 11 which amongst others also included the USS Princeton (CG 59), USS Chafee (DDG 90) and USS Higgins (DDG 76). I'm starting small with the conversion of the Monterey kit which will hopefully turn out relatively ok so that I might even be able to post a few pics.

I have never understood the Aresnal Ship-you just knew that for all the ranting and raving about it being a cheap gun/missile platform it would end up like a fullblown warship! Although they did look really sleak.

Anyway, the Olympics have been on (best for the UK in 100 years ), and that has meant early mornings for me, but I have been busy with an 'insanity' build in 1/700, spurred on by a comment in a one of those 'What do you want XYZ manufacturer to make in 1/700' where somebody just said-'why don't you just scratchbuild them!' Well, I have, with two RFA tankers to follow (one Rover, one Wave), I started with this little build, RMAS Tugs Adept and Bustler............

These photos have shown their flaws, but when you see how small they are, you'll see they are not noticeable on a passing glance.....oh and if you think two were crazy, I have one more waiting in the yard, RMAS Powerful!

Thank you guys, glad to be on board. I'm sure that I will need some advice sooner or later ASFC, those tugs really are excellent. That must have really been a work of patience, I don't think I could do that.

So here is the first batch of pictures of my soon to be USS Princeton. Many details - as well as the decals are still missing. This is also my first time using putty and PE parts and I must admit that it really was quite a challenge (as you can tell from the result) but hopefully my skills will improve when building the next ships.

I thought adding the missing holes in the bow section would be a nice detail






Since I'm already posting, here's my Russian Akula sub (and also my first attempt at modelling silicone water)





All comments and suggestions as to what and where I can improve are always gladly appreciated.

Yep thats me-i'm a tad crazy about building the finer details of a navy. Fortunately, apart from a few harbour launches, that is just about the smallest ship the Naval Service (that being the name for the three combined RN, RFA,RMAS/SERCO; AFAIK), so the ships shouldn't get any smaller. Thanks for the comments.

That s a good looking sub diorama there and your soon to be USS Princeton looks like a very promising model so far. Keep uo the good work.

I'm working on designing a paper model of the Arsenal Ship which I will make available as a free download sometime next month. In the meantime, I am using the CAD drawing as a basis for a styrene scratchbuild.

On the workbench is an HMS Invincible (the carrier) and of course, Oriskany.

Planned are another three Ticonderoga class cruiser (Tripod mast/No VLS, Tripod mast/VLS and one of the last flight), at least three Spruance (As built, w/ Harpoon and W/Armored Tomahawk launchers), two Charles F Adams, two O H Perry class (One short hull, one long hull) and maybe a couple DDG-51 class. Of course, these will only get built when I find the time/money but I want to have representatives from each class of warship from the Cold War era.

As for more paper models, I'm thinking about some of the concepts from the 80s, DDG(X), CGN(X) DDG-51 concept drawings etc.

Excellent That rear shot of it really does show how big it is compared to a Nimitz.

Thank you guys for the encouraging words! Now I'm just waiting for the decals to arrive so I can finish the model. As for the sub diorama, the pictures are already a few weeks old and unfortunately the silicone has started to partially come off on the edges (and I definitely have to look for a proper base for future models). I think I might try some other methods for modelling water in the future.

Nektarios, that is one sweet looking machine Too bad they don't exist for real. What kind of planes will you use for your air wing? F35s? Ospreys?
