Rivets

Just saw an amazing home made rivet tool on starship modeller site. This is a MUST for the larger scale modellers (not so appropriate perhaps for 1/350, but just right for 1/72, 1/48, 1/35). Excellent for armour too.

fellow named "futch" has turned a nail punch into a flat OR domed rivet tool. beautiful work.

When the WEM 1/350 Hood replacement turrets are out, MW will post a small article showing how they are built. This includes a how-to for making large rivets in 1/350. I made them by using very thin Evergreen styrene (0.16mm) and drilling it in from the other side. If you do this carefully, you'll end up with a bumpy rivet. For 1:350, you could do all the heavier rivets

Thanks for that link. I visit Starship Modeler every day but somehow missed that one.

That tool will be very helpful when I get around to the 1/96th scale Keokuk kit; she was covered with flush rivets and the kit doesn't seem to have them.

A very interesting technique that!!!

Must be really hard not to overdrill the styrene sheet though but still, I think I might try it out on one of my larger scale subjects.

Sylvain - good point - I usually do trickjy things 3 times - 2 bad tries and then success

Devin - checked out the Keokuk site, nice model. You will really intensify the coolness with added rivets!
