French lugger "Le Coureur"

There is a horrible frost outside so I decided to stay home

And guess what idea I have came upon? Another sailing vessel...
I hope you are going to like it. This time it is going to be a French sloop "Le Coureur". As I have very good plans for this ship I hope my final model is going to be quite accurate

Here you can find few first elements of deck equipment:
See you soon

The same stuff put on the hull (today I am going to work on a stern).
Cheers!

The name means runner or racer I think, and it is a beautiful classic hull. Great choice of a subject. I look forward to watching as it develops. Are the plans available on the internet, or did they come from a museum?

Hello Michael!
I decided to construct my model in accordance to the plans and information provided by Jean Boudriot and Hubert Berti in a book "Le Coureur 1776" which I have borrowed from my colleague.
Yesterday I have modeled a stern. I found it quite challenging

Looking good Lothar!
Out of curiosity, Are the planks on the hull bottom actually modeled clinker? Or is that a texture map? Either way, very convincing.

How do you think Fritz?

A lifeboat under construction:

Texturing these planks was a real slog for me... Still some interior stuff needed. I am going to finish it tomorrow.

Very clean work. Again, your texturing is very good. Nice wood tones are used.
Can we see some wires?

Thanks Owen for your kind opinion
In fact such a way of texturing is very time-consuming part of work... But since I have discovered how to do it I can simply not step backward
Can we see some wires?
Of course, you are welcome:
Cheers

I know what it's like, when you find a way of doing things that looks right, it's difficult to cut back on the method. Nobody else might know that it's different, but YOU know.
How do you get the different parts of your hull to match up with each other? I use the shrinkwrap and solidify modifiers to get things to conform and then extrude evenly.

I also tried to deal with shrinkwarp and solidify modifiers

until I found an EXCELLENT add-on
object_intersection.py written by our Polish Blender colleague - Witold Jaworski. You can find it here:
http://airplanes3d.net/scripts-253_e.xml
Witold is a strongly dedicated man. He has also written a complete blender manual for aircraft modelers (unfortunately still only in Polish although he plans to translate it into English):

I hope it is going to help you. Good luck with your attempts.
Zdzislaw
P.S. By the way, yesterday I managed to assembly all elements of my boat I have done so far. Now finally it is going to resemble a little bit a sailing vessel

Of course still much work to do with it:

That's looking really good. How are you going to do the rigging?
I've seen that book and it looks good. There are a lot of good Polish Blender artists out there.

Hello Owen. I am very glad to see that you have found this book useful. And you are right - there are many good blender modelers here in Poland. A reason is quite simple: Blender 3D is an available LEGAL FREE software. To comply with the law we choose to be legal
Today another small update. I have put some colours on the hull. And it changes the general overview very remarkably. I hope you like it...
I have just started thinking about rigging. But still have no idea how to do it.

Nice choice of colours.
One thing I would suggest for the rigging is what I've done on occasion. You get a cylinder and parent it to a curve and you run the curve up the mast where the rope is and the rope automagically follows. It's how I did the ropes and chains on my ironclad model.
Here is one tut on how to make a 'vine' but it might as well be a rope.

"Le Coureur" has been finished

In my opinion there is nothing more to add to the model. During modeling I had a first chance to build a very specific hull (clinker). In fact it is not as much difficult as it seems to be. Another new experience is related to texturing. I was dealing with just few textures but sometimes I put them on the model in a new way for me (plank by plank). But it is also quite easy to achieve. The only thing I have not done is rendering under Cycles...

It still lasts a mystery for me. Maybe next time...
I hope you like my new project. When I finally render all the pictures I need I am going to show them, as well.
Thanks to all for kind opinions and support.

Very nice. We don't see many sailing ships here. Rigging can be quite a challenge!

Rigging can be quite a challenge!
You are totally right Phil

A source I have used is not totally accurate. So sometimes I did not know how to manage all the ropes. I hope I have not made any horrible mistake.
Anyway, I feel very happy to finish the second sail ship model in my life

Yet another picture:
Don't be surprised with a poor background. It is used only here. As I need pictures rendered wit Alpha channel on I use no background which makes the rendered image relatively unattractive...

She looks really good. I'm not an expert, but the rigging looks authentic. You've got some sag on a few of the lines, which gives them weight and reality. Looks really good.
Whats next
