1/570 King George V

This is my 1/570 King George V in progress. I have the original kit from the 1970's, but this build is from a Revell Germany re-issue of a few years ago. This is my first ship kit in many decades, so I'm keeping things OTB.

More progress on the KGV. Continuing with the superstructure subassemblies. Added porthole colour as well. (diluted TS-63 Tamiya Nato Black)

More work on the KGV last night. With all the heavy lifting done (spray painting, masking, filling, etc.), I can model the way the wife imagines it to be all the time - an hour of tinkering after dinner.

Thanks. The level of craftsmanship on this forum is astounding. I've chosen to keep this build simple which has allowed me to keep it clean.

More work on the KGV over the weekend. getting very close. Chalk weathering complete, ready for final assembly, rigging and flags.

Getting close. All that is remaining now is rigging, signal flags and the final "deficiencies report" - there's some bent gun barrels and a missing AA gun.

Yeah, going for the cheap, "box-scale" kits is a good way to get back into the hobby after an extended break. Glad to see you're diving in with both feet on this one, she looks pretty good!

I guess you can't get more "box-scale" than 1:570. I've stumbled back into ship model building quite by accident. A friend gave me the original kit from the '70s as a gift, and I couldn't bring myself to build it, so I picked up the re-issue and built that.

Only as simple or complex as you want to make'em, mate.
For example, I'm perfectly happy to OOB a Trumpeter 1/350
Richelieu despite the fact that Nicholas's efforts are just so eyeball-meltingly insane in detail�I'd wager by the time he's done with that Dakar '40 build, he'll have only used about 15-20% of the original kit! I'll just be happy if I can manage to get the ersatz dazzle on the '43 version semi-accurate...

I agree. While extreme sports and extreme kit building are for some, I've re-discovered the joy of kit building through the "classic build' approach. In fact, I've hosted a "classic build night" at my house to get my friends back into kit building as well. It was a hit. We all showed up with a small kit and I provided a BBQ dinner. Conversation, good food, kit building and beer. Good times!

Probably a dumb question but are these models built from scratch or built based on kits?
