Request for techniques: Masking

Hey everyone. I had an idea part of the way through masking a BB-44 california I'm building for a friend. A "how to" on masking.Seems to be a topic that many find daunting.

Now, I've spent many years building and I'm completely sold on Tamiya tape. I plan on covering cutting on glass with sharp knives.

But what techniques do you use that I should consider adding? What techniques for doing curves and disruptive schemes do you use? Do you sketch on the kit with pencil and cut there or pre-assemble the masks on a glass surface and transfer them over?

In short, how do you mask? I'm interested in other people's systems. I know what works for me, but I want to see what else has been done.

Hi Tracy
One of the most useful methods I have found is to use a plan, reduce it to the correct scale and draw the camoflage onto it (you need two, port and starboard). You can then put the tape over it and cut out, if you use Tamiya tape it retains enough stickiness to still adhere well to the model. Do this as often as required, remembering to cut out the correct bit of course!

Very good for complicated camoflage schemes.

If I can use tape, then I go with the Tamiya on a sheet of glass, cut into strips.

For splotch patterns, I use Silly Putty, or a liquid masking agent.
