Alaska class hulls

Post by scratchshipnut »

While looking at pics for my diorama base I noticed these ships left really clean wakes. Was the hull design what would be considered sucsessfull?

I don't see any reason to believe they were more or less successful than other US cruisers. They certainly required more horsepower for any speed than was predicted, and they were somewhat overweight as completed. These are faults they shared with every US cruiser design of the WW.II program.

They were also notorious for their large turning radius because of their single rudder.
If an unfriendly power had attempted to impose on America the mediocre educational performance that exists today, we might well have viewed it as an act of war.
