Royal navy : colour of decks on coal fired ships

Hi Guys ,

I've read somewhere that on most RN ships fired with coal , they had their decks where the funnels came on painted black .

Is this true or can it be confirmed ( "Zinnia" project in mind ) ?

Many thanks ,

Laurent

From the pictures I have seen (which are mainly earlier ships) the answer is "No". 19the century warships had either dark grey metal decks or planked decks. During coaling these were often protected with tarpaulins.

Hi Pieter ,

thanks for this answer , I'll have to wait for other advices before I take my final decision , I already have put a coat of black to my deck around the funnels and I have to say it looks handsome ...

Regards
