Hi!

I have always been fascinated with the British Navy aside from the US Navy which actually adds up to more than 1/2 of my stash. Much like the first all-big gun dreadnought and all it's other naval innovations.
This is my 3rd British ship. I was very impressed with the models of:
-Rusty White
-Andy Elwood
-Tim Hanbury
-Frank Sphar
-Jim Baumann
-Molders
-The other 1/700 Hood modelers
-And Hood models in all ship websites
I used Trumpeter's 1/350 HMS Hood for this build. I'm using photoetching from GMM's Hood set. This would be a very challenging part for this 13 year old to use. The Hood website is a real gold mine for those who like to build Hood in all different eras. I will be depecting the Hood in a fictional dio much like Fletcher.


Here is a pic of Hood waterlined and painted. The degaussing cable was the real challenging part. I was such a whimp to remove the plastics ones so I just placed the PE over them but the results were very nice!


Here are the main guns with blast bags made from glue. Mike Ashey's book was really helpful in the build.

A pic of the mast. It was a real pain in the neck building this. The parts fit and control is horrible!!!!!!.

Here is a pic of the Hood's center part. The stacks are almost finished with the rails, vents and other PE added. Somehow I did not completely removed the stack's grilles.

The Hood's ammo boxes were really bad. Many "circles" that sink really look bad. I just filled with clay and superglue but it worked!

The railings on the boat deck, the stack bases and the superstructure are now added.


A closeup view of the superstructure's rails. It looks nice once PE is added. I somehow forgot to place the box housing on the gun director.


A pic of the Admiral's cabin. The "HOOD" letters is not very clear on the pic. I'll just paint them black soon.


Another closeup of the superstructure's rear. The guns are placed temporarily.


And another pic. I somehow managed to remove the Triangular like plastic box near the mast and replace with a ladder which was said by the Hood website

The model is actually nearing completion but the pics are still in progress.

Here are 2 pics of the stern's awning stanchions. I didn't exactly follow the instruction. It calls for 14 bipods each side but I somehow placed just 11. But it looks nice:

I have a q..

Are the four boxes near the gun directors flag bags? and what IS the real color of the blast bags? The images on modelwarships' archives on Hood appears to have white ones but the Hood website mentioned that it was not white nor canvas.

How is the GMM PE? Are you satisfied with it?

As far as i know in 41 the Blast Bags was grey near Hull Color. There are some Pictures from earlier Stages where they re white/bright grey. Seems like Peacetime Pictures.
The Purpose of the Boxes at the Signal Platform near the HACS Gun Directors was Storage of Flags in my Opinion. There is no Weapon near enough which makes presumable thats a Ready to Use Locker.

Thanks!! The model is actually almost done but the images came in very late and yes the deck tan is from Tamiya. I just added some drops of Tamiya's Buff to make it darker and more "tanish". The GMM PE is very nice and its not that frustrating since its very easy to work it. I would like to try some of WEM's PE and Lionroar's soon!!

Hi Nick,

He's right, those boxes were indeed Hood's flag lockers- two on each side just aft of the HACS MkIII* and signalmens shelters. These had grated fronts through which flag bags could be retrieved or stowed. I think they could pull a flap over them when not needed. The signal halyards were located outboard of these (they tied up to small cleats on the inside of the rear bulwark). I don't think we have a really clear shot of these as they appeared on the ship...but we definitely do have a shot of one in her wreckage.

The blast bags (rom 1940 onward) were hull colour. In this case, by the time of her final mission she was painted all over in medium grey (AP507B). So, thats the colour of the blast bags as well.

On with the progress:


The dio being painted. I'm using water acrylics from Reeves' and Academy's


I used the colors Pthalo Blue, Pthalo Green and Cobalt Blue. The white ones will be from Tamiya's.


And a new mast with the derrick in it's stowed position, a new yardarm and some rigging completed. The derrick hook seems to touch the U.P. deck. Yes I know the searchlights are in the wrong places..

Next will be improving the dio and more of Hood soon!

Nice work Nick!
Its very interesting for me to see how other Modelers deal with the Challenges of the Kit.

The last Picture brings me to a Question i riddle about since i was starting to build the Mainmast.
Is it right that 1940 only the two Supports was painted with a white Bar just below the Wrapping Plate, where the Struts come together? Maybe Allen or some of our Specialists can help out of this.
Well and i would like to have a second Question.
The Mainmast, below the Starfish, is rigged with so called "Helm Signals". John Roberts opines in his Anatomy that there was a green Ball at the Stbd- and red Cones at Portside. Thomas Schmidt also show it on his Renders.
Are these Signals made to figure out if a Ship is approaching or dislodging when you just see one of its Ends? Or does it have something to do with the current Position of the Rudder? (Rudder Angle Indicator)
This also one of the Questions i am thinking about, with a big Lack of Knowledge about usual Procedures in the Royal Navy.

A very valuable Source while modeling H.M.S Hood. I spent Hours with my Nose digging in this Book.

By the Way, Nick, your Mast looks excellent, the lowered Derrick with its Rig looks very clean! And u removed the funny Hat and added a Stairway to the Deck below. Compliment!

I am placing Hood in a diorama with nature. It is completely fictional but I would say this would be near Liverpool, a place I think that Hood never visited but did she actually visited Liverpool???

Here's a step-by-step guide on how I made the other part of Liverpool.

After making the outline (pic above) i painted with Earth Undercoat.

Then I sprinkled 3/4 of the entire base with Green blended Fine Turf leaving some of the Undercoat visible to simulate the "soil".

Then I sprayed the Green turf with Scenic cement

I then prepared and sprinkled the green base
-Yellow Grass Fine Turf for the lighter highlights
-Earth Fine Turf for the Earthly highlights
-Burnt Grass Fine Turf for the darker highlights
and Soil fine Turf for the soil..
