Other than Electric.

I don't want to do the electric motor thing, I'm in the middle of building a unique vessel (read: making it up as I go )

My idea so far is a steam turbine and 2 shafts with CPPs, the engine turns at a constant speed, and the control pitch propellors do the rest.

I was wondering if anyone out there has done something similar who might be able to throw some ideas my way. I've already posted a CPP question, just thought there might be a different way of making the thing go, other than electricity.

I have worked on many vessels with this system.
Some of the parts on a real one are very small.
Graupner had a go but put it in the too-hard basket?
Depending on the size of the units I suspect that it would be extremely difficult to engineer. Maintenance would be a killer also.
Because you are using constant speed engines ................ have you considered a cone clutch system? That will give you variable speed on the props.

How about a small internal combustion engine with steady pitch props? variable pitch is a killer and may let you down easily, especially without the proper maintenance. since you are thinking of steam, heat from the engine will not be a problem.. Or you can use more than one engine.
