I have begun construction of Hasegawa's 1/350th Mikasa, using the Yellow Sea kit, which provides for building her as completed in the black & white scheme, which is how I'll be doing the model.

Will also be using Lionroar's Mikasa set.

Here's what she looks like so far:

Nice. I like the Black & White scheme - shoulda waited for the Yellow Sea version to come out before I bought the kit.

What are the actual differences between the two kits? Only the extra ventilators?

Great project Timmy, clean and promising work! I owe you for the tip of drilling barrels with tip of the knife - it suited me completely! (it was the only option before I bought pin vice).

Some update


None of the photos I have show Mikasa with the cross-members on the ventilation cowls, but since the LR set included 4 of them, I put them on anyway. However, Mikasa at this time had 6 cowls of this size, and so I had to use spare PE ladders to make the members for the rear two cowls.

She looks like an excellent and clean ship Timmy!

Here are some for today. The railings around the funnel platform are unpleasantly messy, unfortunately

You'll note that I've only put two of the funnel rings (jackstays, � la recent IJN PE set nomenclature) out of the 8 provided in the Lionroar set. I did so because the museum guidebook that came with the kit shows only two black lines for the as-built configuration, whereas it shows all 8 lines for the later Battle of the Japan Sea version.

Additionally, the kit's funnels originally had several triangular points where I now put the rings, thus I thought these triangles were meant to represent the two rings.

It is difficult to make out whether there were any rings at all in photos, but I thought they looked neat, so put them on.

Funnels completed, yay!

Work on front superstructure commencing. First layer of paint given. Several more to come

As you can see, I dug open the vision slits on the conning station.

Here's today's update. Major parts are dry-fitted.

Have added railings to the rear and the port/starboard lights. After these pictures were taken, the PE bridge was successfully forced into shape and its edges glued together (with Tamiya plastic cement, which worked very well, to my surprise!).

Today's work:

I decided to cut the railing into sections instead of measuring and bending each angle. Unfortunately, this led to quite a few unsightly gaps
