Here you are the first steps to built the 1/400 scale Pinguin:
The ship will be build and painted as Greeke cargo Kassos shown in the picture below.

In the following indicated site you can see some very interesting pictures of the ship before and after the conversion in auxiliary cruiser.

I build the hull by keel and frames I got from a cargo plan of that time.
I drew the frames at the PC, printed them and glued them with trichloroethylene on a plastic sheet. I cut the frames out and I glued them to the keel fitting the main deck at the some time.

Hello Bento This looks very interesting and very neat . Will you be covering the out side of the hull with styrene sheet or strips?

I covered the hull with a double plank laying made up of plasticard lists. In the next post I will send some images...

Here you see the work after the double plank laying made up of plasticard lists.
The typical cruiser stern as been modelled with Milliput putty.


I built the rudder, its framework and the propeller with plasticard. The sheer strakes were gotten from adhesive sheets used in graphics.

The sheer strakes were finally fixed to the hull with a first hand paint coating.
I also sketched the main upper structures with its numerous rectangular windows.

This is trully stunning work

The hull is most impressive! May I ask what these adhesive sheets exactly are? Some sort of plastic or paper?

They are sort of a jelly/plastic semi transparent temporary adhesive sheets used in graphics drawings. Otherwise you could also use simple adhesive paper sheets but, due to paper thickness and its fluffyness the jelly plastic sheets are better. If I may add, I would suggest - in order to obtain perfect stripes - to cut the sheet using two N.11 X acto or similar blades glued one to the other. This "double blade" cutter allow you to get precise little less of 1 mm stripes.

my Name is Ralf, Im a german so you have to excuse my horrible english...

May I ask you some questions about your marvelous "Pinguin", Schiff33?

I want to realise the 1/700 Modell of that ship from HP-Models. And I think I�ll take the same paragon - the Greek steamer "Kassos" - which is shown at the foto. Do you have any informations about the used colours? Do you know, what paragon the germans did use to know how to paint their raiders?
I have been in Flensburg at the library of the Navy School in M�rwick to look for some informations about that. I found the "Gr�ner" which became a prescription in the German navy at 1938 and I think it was the main source of informations about merchant ships for the Kriegsmarine. But I am not sure... But there are no informations about the colours in this book, do You have anything about that??
In the book "Gespensterkreuzer HK 33 Hilfskreuzer PINGUIN auf Kaperfahrt", Jcohen Brenecke is talking about some "shipcards" which Kr�der is using to get the right paragones for his camouflage. But nobody knows something about this cards. For the first is Brenecke not the best source for those things and for the second could it be interesting to know what Kpt. Kr�der had had to know to paint his ship in the right way... So we have to know, what he did know, I think...

Also the Marine DV Nr. 601, which is the final rapport of the raid of "Pinguin", is not talking about colours...

Another question:

You show us the link to Tone welldone page and his splendid plans - thanks Tone for that! - but I cant find a plan about the "Spantenriss" - I dont know the english word. It is the plan of ships dimension seen from the front or the back... I have one from the "Altlantis" . They were sisters, but perhaps you know mare here too??
Once in the future, I want to build the Ship i 1:100. Them I think I need a Spantenriss...

I would be very thankful, I you could help...

Dear Ralf, no problem for your English; I'm an Italian, so...
Unfortunately I don't have any reliable documentation about Pinguin colours. To choose which ones to use, I refered to other models pictures as the one I add below,

summing my deductions based on other pictures though black and white.
For example, I think the red hull unquestionable. In the pictures, the upper work colour looks so dark that I may assume it being black, a very common tone for that time hulls. The main deck colour is not sure at all. It might have been a little lighter or darker, but further to a German dear friend of mine - who talked to ex sailors boarded on an auxiliary cruiser - I decided for the medium-dark grey. I painted the superstructure with a very light cream that I inferred both from the black and white pictures and from a Hansa ship coloured one I attach.

That time ship's mastings, the Hansa ones too, were somewhat sand yellow, as I noticed in several pictures and as you can see in the colour one above.
I often wondered about whether masts would have been repainted, I haven't yet decided which colour my masts will be, I'm thinking about it...

As far as the hull line drawings are concerned I guess the Atlantis ones will go because the differences between the ships were small especially on some superstructure details.

If I may ask, could I see your Atlantis hull line drawings, please? As I have in mind - for the future - to build a Neidenfels like ship to paint with the four German cargo mimetic tones.

Then i ame able to give you a look of the information the "Marine Dienstvorschrift Nr. 87 has about "Kassos"...

Do some one know if there is a rigister of shipowners with some colourinformation? Perhaps we cam take it from that way?

I also start to built some details of the main deck as the hold hatchways, the funnel, the engine room skylights and the first floor of stern owner stateroom.


In order to build up and refine the various quarter deck sections, I glued them one to the other with white glue (Vinavil) so to be able to divide them again for ultimate painting and last details placing.

Below you can see the central main ship superstructures with a first painting coat and part of the boat deck weathering.

Btw.: This picture of the ship on this site must be the "Atlantis" because the mainguns in the Hull are both near the bow... "Pinguin" hab one pair in this part and the second pair was near the stern... This is Schiff16...
