I dont think Model boats are interested in the sort of stuff I do these days, I did have quite a few articals published years ago when I built Norrix, Foundation Franklin and Star Purseus also when I did the research on the flower Bryony, I sent Victorious one the other day, I have had no contact with John Cundell since thoughs days, I stopped buying it, I pop in Menzie,s each month to see what your up to and where you have been, which is always interesting, as you know, I am happy doing my thing and trying to help fellow modellers.ARH

Yes, yes, yes, it would be very nice to see that. Maybe in combination with other modellers to give different techniques. It would sure be interesting, don't think there's too much out there on this subject and as well documented as Ron's night classes! :thumbs_up_1:

And you are certainly helping me Ron. If I had never contacted you a few months ago, I would not be scratchbuilding. It was you who gave me the inspiration and encouragement to have a go AND I AM ENJOYING EVERY MINUITE OF IT :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo: :woo_hoo:

well the first part went in two weeks ago. from start to hull finished in grey paint, thats paper ribs, wood ribs, planking, matting, fibra paste, sanding, undercoating, 30 photo,s and text, you should all copy it and save, because what ever ship you build you would learn something from it , if only how not to do it :lol_3: :lol_3: :thumbs_up_1:

Simple idea is yes it would be an excellent idea, but it maybe simplier if Ron sublitted the article to one of the RC model magazines here in the UK?

yeah, but he'll make more if he publishes a book! besides.... even if we save it, it will eventually be lost or deleted. Especially with those pesky viruses that ruin everything. And printing it off would use far too much ink with all the wonderful pictures! Besides, by doing a book he will never be forgotten to those that buy it!

Actually what kenny has said is quite true. No disrespect ,but web sites come and go and surprisingly not every modeller has a desires for access to the web it's only one of a number of mediums. But "Books" are around for decades. and longer. One has only to look at books written by Brian King they are describing how Brian built his exceptional models they will become the iconic publications in years to come. Every modeller must have "Books" that have long ceased publication but remain much sort after at book fairs, shows and on the web. What I say to AH, is think of Jimmy Wood one of the finest ship modelers in the UK with a wealth of knowledge in his brain and at his finger tips but sadly that is were it will remain only once ever putting pen to paper. What a loss it will be if his skills aren't recorded . I say the same for AH think long and hard I will always try to encourage modellers to record their skill whether it be on the Web but especially on paper and more to the point in book form which may well out live the electronic medium in years to come .

The question is were photos taken at a high enough resolution to be printed in a book? Photos that look great on a website will almost always look terrible if printed out.

And about the "websites go away" argument. This is true, but printed books go away, too. You have to print thousands of copies of a book in order to give it some chance of surviving over 10 years into the future. So the chances might be better, but it isn't a sure thing. I've got a few stories that have been published, initially both online and in print. Even through I wrote them, I can't get copies of the print editions anymore, but the online versions are still there. With the advent of online archiving sites and engines, web content is lasting longer and longer.

How about doing it like Rusty White does. Put it on CD. No printing costs which can make or break your profit line. :eyebrows:

Devin For my sins I have been involved in writing since the late 1960s and my own work for good or ill keeps popping up somewhere. As for Books well libraries often retain books on reference shelves for many years. This of course is not whether the electronic medium of storing information on our chosen hobby is better or worse than other mediums like magazines and books it's just different, but there are other considerations. As for reproduction of photographic material on the web you are correct. AH is no doubt fully aware of this. All "Paper" mediums do require high resolution or high quality photos, which to be fair is not a hurdle it was . For books the problems are centred on getting a good publisher. Specialist books which tends to be a label for activities such as ours don't always sell in great numbers but do find there way into libraries and thankfully on to the shelves of those with a real interest in the subject. In trying to inform modellers in a "how to fashion" it's beneficial to explore all the mediums available but Books remain one of the best ways to condense what we as modellers have to say and are not reliant on any of the electronic pathways to disseminate that information, it is their to feel and look at any time. Well its time to get of my soapbox and go and do some modelling!

The CD is a great idea as well, but then it might as well be online or saved on a computer. Granted that goes against my argument that virus's can destroy all that but one of the main factors i'd like a book is that then i can have it right there with me at the workshop....I dont know about you guys, but my computer is no where near where i model.... and it would be too much of a hassle to keep running up here trying to figure stuff out....while with a book i can just flip a few pages and keep it open studying the pics and text while i work on my ship.

That's a good one Kenny never thought of it that way but to have the reference work by your side in the workshop is definitely a plus. I suppose a further example would be in keeping photos as reference. I take photos into the workshop and either place them in a folder or place them on the plans board next to the area Im working on . Yet I have all the same pictures on the lap top but that very rarely goes into the workshop.
