Here's the latest slow update...
right now switching between all four carriers but the Enterprise and what will be the San Jacinto are coming along... the Dragon kit for the Independence class is a royal pain - I ended up having to get some super glue remover and redid the hull. Also scratchbuilt a new island. The Enterprise is coming along as well and went ahead and kitbashed the Tamiya Hornet island and the Enterprise island so still working on that..
Playing around also with the acrylic jel medium for the water in the bay,,,

If you want relatively still water for the yard try something the railroad guys use called "Realistic Water". It comes in a bottle and you just pour out layers and it dries translucent so you'll have to paint the base a shade or two of blue if you want that effect or just paint the surface. It's an idea, can't wait to see this done.

PS. I know what you mean about the Indy kit
I've started working on it multiple times and put it away shortly thereafter each time.

The acrylic jel medium is actually the same thing.. however just trying to see how the water coloring will pan out as the water in the bay seems to be more green than blue

That's going to be one busy looking diorama
at a guess I'd say a sticking point would be displaying people on the carriers and dockyard, 1-350 isn't all that bad, 1-700 however is a right pain in the
what I have been told, a very small blob of PVA on the figures, allow to completely dry, and slightly bend arms, or leg to ''try'' and give it some 3-D structure, as for myself, 1-700 figures, I try very hard not to bother, still waiting for that VERY bright day to arrive when someone out there will produce 3-D 1-700 figures.

Of course I dont even want to go there! ... However as you may have noticed I don't have to worry about any planes! I'm thinking about doing a little creativity and have some harbor tugs in there.

I have some ships already made (4 battleships, 3 carriers, 2 cruisers and 5 destroyers)

Does anyone have an idea on what color the cranes were painted during WW2 of particular the Alameda Naval Station Crane?

Having spent some time at naval bases and yards, I would bet on gray. Consider that there was camouflage on the west coast during the war, example of Alameda below, and repainting cranes in 1945 would not be a high priority item.
