Well with the flurry of activity the past few days regarding kits of the Jauregeberry I thought I'd start a new thread dedicated to French warships, primarily those elusive pre-dreadnoughts. So to all you tumblehome fans, welcome aboard! Guess I'll start with my project, Dupuy de Lome in 1/350 and 1/700.

French warships in 1890' 1900' had a particular look.
They are very different of British, Japanese, USA with 2T2 front and aft....

I hope Combrig will release few French pre-WW1 ships. Too many RN ships lately.

There is no such thing as 'to many RN ships'!!!!

I have a question about the bow, is it shaped like that for ramming?
Not my kind of ships, but very interesting.

Depends for whom

I don't want to build even famous Dreadnought. KGV, Nelson and 'O' were my first and last RN ships.
Same applies to German ships. I don't know why

Gestibus et colorirubus non discutantum, thank God for that, this site would be boring if everyone only made RN ships, or USN, or German.
That's so great about this site, all warships are present, from HMS Victory to USS Nimitz, all scales and eras.

Still, there is no such thing as to many RN ships (IMHO)

That's right! I love to see some rare subjects such are Italian and French ships on a forum dominated by USN, IJN and RN. I build "rare" subjects too - Soviet.

Here is a quote of Jacques Druel of L'Arsenal:

1879/1898

-7 coats of black paint are given to the hull. 2 coats of primer and 2 coats of Schweinfurth green are applied to the underwater hull.
-Black funnels, superstructures and inside walls , white.

By order of 9 december 1879 funnels will be painted with different colours depending the affectation of each ship in the squadron. So some ships have a buff funnel and others a gray one. Black stripes on the funnel give the number of the ship in the division row.

In 1886 white paint was prohibited as an external color because it was suspected to aid the aiming of enemy gunners.

1898/1910:
By order of 7 June, a white line will be painted along the waterline. ( valid until 1908 )

By order of 12 June 1900 all funnels will have to be painted of the same color of the superstructures.
Ships serving in the Channel and Atlantic Ocean will have the following colors: black hull, light gray superstructures with a black stripe on the funnel.
Ships serving in the Mediterranean: Black hull with buff superstructures and funnels. Hull side walls are painted buff internally and externally.

Splendid stuff there, Chris C and Maxim.

Klein, I understand that the odd bow is not a ram but is referred to as a 'snout' bow (or that's how one writer referred to it!). It was cut away at the upper decks to prevent blast damage from the forward gun when firing dead ahead, but with the lower part of the hull retained for bouyancy, thus creating the odd shape. The battleship Massena had a very similar bow.

Got to agree it makes the site more interesting when we dont always focus on ships of the RN USN IJN but other world navy's too, that reminds me i have a Richelieu in my stock pile when i can find it!!

Hi guys

I am having a French moment....

have just completed the Henri IV--should be up at MW in the next few days.

The festivval dreamworks Massena scales out exactly--its a good starting point- appears to be based on the archive plans-the hatches--whilst depicted closed are all in the right place and in the right number

Jaureguiberry was not as successful--see Chris C's trials....

I'm pretty sure that Service Historique didn't have their plans for Jaureguiberry up when this kit was produced. I think the kit was even released before the online archive was even opened. Since then the plans have been available for download of all the other kits this gentleman has produced. Woohoo!
