hi all

as the title reads.. what do u people use for your inspiration to built certain model types

mine.. (this is very sad) i use silent hunter 3( trying to hide and look at ships is quite tricky at times).. great for being able to look at quite alot of ships from any angle and helepd my alot on my current built.

its because of this that my next ships is going to be a dido (yes timmy it is also because i used it to armour whore to lvl 48)

ARH and Bill Waldorf's builds always inspire me.

Yeah ARH and Waldorf, not to mention David Gatt and his Enterprise, and of course Jim Baumann

Plus the current group of fellows coming out of China now are outstanding craftsmen. Whenever one of their ships come out, I spend hours pouring over it. The detail and craftsmanship is outstanding.

Do you mean reference, or inspiration?

inspiration... ive seen the dido before but never in such detail as in sh3 especially as its gives me prety much a free scale 3 view..

what makes u want to go "im gonna build that"

..from each other! The modelers here are terrific.

My inspiration is comming by:

Ship with real history ( sink in action)
Prince of Wales, Arizona, Blucher, Kniaz Suvarov, Bretagne, Good Hope, Titanic...

Laid down anniversary
HMS Defense; Laid down in feb 1905
HMS Invincible; Laid down in April 1906 (also historic ship)
Von der Tann; Laid down in 1908 (of course, to come...)

Never Were
Very big or strong battleships with special look.
Russian Putilov design, H44, Montana, Borodino

And personnal designs
Panzerschiff studies

Hi Alll,

For inspiration, I use sites like this with lots of talented folks and the web and books for research into something that strikes my fancy. From there it is a short step into reality on the model bench.

Always did Russian ships, saw them in a VERY old book once and I was sold... They were just too nice not to build models of them. Had a certain hunger as there were no kits around of those ships,but with the recent boom I have started building those.

Currently I have most of the Russian ships so now my inspiration comes from the ships I sail! Taking pictures of the plans and copying plans that are onboard. So it's mainly scratchbuilding from now on!

What inspires a modeller? That�s a hard question. I have always been inspired by other builders models Ron and Bill to name but two both outstanding model makers. Jim builds in a period I find really interesting and the subject material often on the hard edge of model building. Having built a number of Soviet warships you could say I have more than a passing interest in that subject. But what really inspires me is the new comer to the hobby particularly their keenness to learn and build. Having been building and sailing models for over 50years it's that fresh un-feted approach a new builder brings that really inspires me and keeps me building.

I think that Dave is reffering to people like myself, who 12 months ago, had never attempted building anything from scratch. What inspires me is people like Dave, Ron and Bill, who have taught me how to go about building such wonderful models. I am not in their league yet, by a long chalk, but I am getting there slowly.
Also all the guys on the forums who have kindly commented on my progress, with the Vic and Marlborough, it's nice to know that there is such a great bunch of guys amongst all you modellers, so that is what inspires me to keep on building.

Well a lot of you know this week for me has been very hard, I have been up to my neck in the COLOUR WARS, to me it was time I got out, and begin to do my modelling and leave all this crap behind, its not that I want to go , but sometimes you get the feeling you should, well this morning I tossed a coin, head I go , tails I stay, it came down tails, I then logged on to the site and e-mails, I read some of your support post, I thought why the should I leave all these good guys here some of whom need my input, that what inspires me to go on modelling, THANKS GUYS, they know who they are. ARH

Being relatively new to rc boats and encountering alot of problems I've needed alot of inspiration, especially as my job keeps me away from building for long periods of time. Seeing what has been achieved by the members of this forum and especially the recently posted pics of the kingsbury grey navy day help to keep me motivated and make me want to achieve greater things with my models. So its a big thanks to you all and hopefully I'll finish my boat this year (off to the falklands for four months in two weeks) and start something else bigger and better.

Well. what inspires me is waht ever i come across that I like. I don't follow a pattern, and don't try to purposefully build a collection. If I see a ship that I like then I'll probably build it. And of course, the builds on this site always inspire me.

My "inspiration" for warship modeling goes back more than four decades. Over that time, other interests and life necessities have been merely interruptions of varying magnitudes, but whenever they abate or are dealt with, my modeling "compass" always points back to warships.

That aside, what inspire me on a more immediate basis, are a ship's (in no particular order):

*Appearance (exception: paint)

*Historical significance

*Function

*Performance

*Technical interest


Things that do NOT inspire me are (again, in no particular order):

*Someone else's chosen build or project

*Camouflage or other paintwork

*What's "hot" in the model marketplace and/or new releases

*A ship's fate (i.e. whether it was sunk or not)

*Conceptual ships and/or ships that only existed "on paper" {except a few ships that were actually building, but not completed}

*Anything to do with PE, rigging, or aftermarket upgrades

*Ships that are JPU to me (i.e., Essex-class carriers)


Because I work in Perfect Scale, full-hull format only, and because many of my subjects are not available commercially, most of my projects are done as scratch-builds, kit-bashes, or conversions.

Probably not a "typical" MW profile but, then again, who here is "typical"?
