Have thrown in the towel--and drilled numerous small holes through the gel from above and through the hull form underneath

this hopefully will persuade the gel to eventually set!!

lesson learnt--less is more and thin is better!

Well Jim hope it don't spoil what is a very Interesting subject and you continue with this venture.

We do not see a ship in a sunken model state very often, if at all.

Hope it works out ok.

It looks like it will take another 3 - 4 weeks to clear....


arghh- - but,... it really IS clearing-- glacially slow...

so I have started something else to fill the time!!

Without reading through everything, why did you use gell and not a clear resin in the first place ?

clear resin is exothermic ==> produces heat- not ideal for a resin model- and sets very hard...

I need to be able to cut away the meniscus where it tries to creep up the sides of bulkheads etc...

gel is much softer and can be retro-cut....!

theer was reason as well a smethod behind the madness...!!

Hi Jim,

how 's this project going???? Did it dry yet? And how thick was the layer you put on? I always use very thin layers, one after the other. When the layer is too thick, the top layer is drying out fast and occasionally the layer below will be "incapsulated" and never dry. If that would be the case, I'm not sure, but perhaps cutting or drilling a hole in the top layer, where the lower layer is still white, may help? Just an idea though.
Hopefully it did dry, I'd love to see the result!

I have to admit Jim I�m curious too, how is it doing?

Next time use Polyester Resin, Jim! It does not excert any heat whatsoever when setting. Biologists (such my wife) use it to conserve plants and dead animals. (You know butterflies 'n stuff)

You can do layers of up to 7cm with this one!

Having comprehensively stuck my head in the sand for a number of weeks...

distracted myself by starting the build of another ship...

weekly replacing diligently the silica gel and emptying the dehumidifier....

and having drilled numerous small holes...


I can report...

that it has cleared and is dry--at laaaaaast!

Yihaaa!

I shall give it another 2 weeks befor applying ( THIN !!!! ) further layers....

Seems an interesting and unusual project. Following it!

It really had dried out...!


so I have for the past few days been adding more THIN ( )layers...

I decided to persevere with the gl on this model as I did not want to start mixing differing media...
I had built a 'dam' around the base--partly t contain the gel--and partly to give a level to be able to keep the water to, I used a polished piece of styrene that I dragged across the gel to keep the level consistent across the baseboard.

one can begin to see the desired effect....

Good to see progress Jim, must be a relief for you, I know it was giving me sleepless nights.
I will be very interested to see how you will colour the sea enough to conceal the base yet preserve the depth of the water.

Lovely, still wondering how you're going to paint the water surface, between the guns etc. That'll be a challenge (well for me it would be, for you it's probably a walk in the park)
What colour are you going to use for the water?
