Hi Martin,
Okie is looking sweet! Have you considered boxing in the top half of the vegetable locker with some sheet styrene and screening? I believe the top half was actually partially grated screening for ventilation so maybe you could use some sort of fine screen to enclose the top half?

The drawing on the left was her original design with the Foundry vents coming out. The drawing on the right shows that this section was eventually enclosed and turned into a "side cleaners locker".

Jeff -

Thanks for the comment. Appreciate it.

If I'm understanding what you are saying, I need to build out this section, by adding bulkheads around the "edges"?

With a coat or two of paint down on the boats and secondary guns, I assembled said guns to give them a final coat of paint. Everything is from BlackCat models. Really nice stuff - there is so much detail packed onto these, as you can see from the close up of the 3in AA gun.

Hi Martin,
Yes, that is exactly what I mean. It was a simple box structure. Kraken Hobbies soon to be released 1/700 version appears to have nail the design of it from this picture.

Thanks Jeff. I have to laugh - I was holding that model at the Nationals and forgot I had pictures of it. :doh_1:

The spotting top is just sitting there, still work to be done before its ready to be attached but I wanted to see how it all looked. Starting to look like a battleship.

I will admit that I've really never studied the salvage photos of Oklahoma before. Mostly because they are somewhat depressing. But now that Jeff Sharp pointed out that the area around the vegetable locker is wrong on the Iron shipwright kit, I've found some salvage photos that seems to show that the area was simply screened in, as Jeff surmised. So, FML, now that I've seen it, I can't un-see it.

And here I was thinking I could start weathering the deck to tone it down. (sigh)

Jeff,
Thanks for the comment! I did design that part but the kit will actually be Tom's Modelworks and is a collaboration between Tom's, Model Monkey, 3D Modelparts and myself. Eagerly await it's release.

Martin, those are some great looks at it! Some excellent detail can be seen. Notice in the first picture the large service door on the lower left, there is a smaller door within that large door. Also notice on the right hand side just behind the gooseneck vent there are ladder rungs running up the bulkhead to the upper level to gain access to the side cleaners locker.

You have a great eye for picking out details Jeff - thanks. Saw your comments about the OK's degaussing cable in the NV class CASF thread.

Looking at the plans, before I looked at photos, I was planning to box in the area around the locker, with some screens on either side. So I started by removing some detail to allow me to add the overhead, and by adding some plastic strip to hold the screens.
IMG_1808.JPG
When I found out that was wrong, I removed the vent and structure at the end of the locker area.
IMG_1809.JPG
I then cut an overhead from plastic card and checked to see if the dimensions were ok.
IMG_1810.JPG
Next I put some 20x20 strip around the edges of the platform. These will act to hold the bottom of the screens in place.
IMG_1811.JPG
Test fit to see how it looks
IMG_1812.JPG
IMG_1813.JPG
It looks to be a little too high, so I might have to find the enthusiasm to sand the top of the original area down to account for the height of the plastic card. Next I have to wait for the PE mesh, which won't arrive until next week at the earliest.

Looking sweet Martin! Looking at the plans, it does appear that the top deck on the veggie locker was a step higher than the boat deck in front of it so you may not need to file it down.

Thanks Jeff. I noticed that. The original resin piece does sit proud of the boat deck, so I may have to do a little sanding to make sure it's not too big of a step.

Work continues on the area around the vegetable locker. I finished making the overhead, and then painted same. Looks like I may need to do a little touch up and paint again
IMG_1848.JPG
IMG_1854.JPG
The photo-etch mesh arrived. It's exactly what I was looking for. Painted it tonight. Once dry, I'll cut to size with a PE scissors.
IMG_1855.JPG
I also masked off the vegetable locker and airbrushed another coat of 5D. Of course, I forgot to sand down the top of the existing cast vegetable locker, as I planned to. When I dry fit number 3 turret, it clears the top of the vegetable locker, but just barely. But then, the really thing looks similar in wreck photos.

Slow progress on Oklahoma since the last update. Case came (from Grandpas Cabinets), blast bags were painted (still need touch up), more 3D printed parts arrived (from Kraken Hobbies), a new photo-etch catapult showed up (from Toms Modelworks), I finished installing the screen around the vegetable locker and started making the boat cradles (also from Toms Modelworks & they are very finicky to build). Those have to be finished before the next round of painting can commence. At this rate it may be NEXT December 7th before its done.

Martin,
That screen looks sweet! On the starboard side, the potato peeler room was actually solid bulkhead with two portholes. You can see it in this pic. The screening is represented by dotted lines on the plan.

Thanks Jeff - that is an easy fix. Glad you spotted it before I permanently attached the overhead! Appreciate all your input.

Slow progress continues on Oklahoma...

Boat cradles are all assembled and painted.
IMG_1971.JPG
IMG_2027.JPG
Tested the the layout of how they'll fit on the ship (before they were painted). I had to add a .20x.20 strip of styrene to the bottom of each PE boat deck boat cradle, otherwise they wouldn't clear the skylights (and barely clear them now).
IMG_2021.JPG
Meanwhile, the vegetable locker was completed and the 3D printed motion picture projection booth was permanently attached After attaching the MPB, I realized that it might interfere with the strut from the main mast. First thought was to rip it off and start again, but I'll wait until I get to the main mast to see if it actually is an issue.
IMG_2034.JPG
Also washed the deck with burnt umber. Not satisfied with how that came out - the spots that were touched up with a brush stand out like sore thumb. :doh_1:
