In 1:700, bread-and-butter or sandwich works better in my opinion. Take a side drawing of the ship and divide her into layers of 1mm thickness. Then work out the notches, indentations and casemates per layer.
I must however say I've not yet built a actual casemate in this manner, but several hulls, with various indentations.
