Casemates

Post by Rob »

I had a disaster over the weekend trying to build a 1/700 hull with inset casemates.

I used the plank and frame method for the hull.

Any other suggestions? Would a bread-and-butter method work better?

Cheers,

Rob

In 1:700, bread-and-butter or sandwich works better in my opinion. Take a side drawing of the ship and divide her into layers of 1mm thickness. Then work out the notches, indentations and casemates per layer.

I must however say I've not yet built a actual casemate in this manner, but several hulls, with various indentations.

What ship are you working on?

Hi Michel,

Thanks for this.

The ship is the USN pre-dreadnought USS Illinois in her later fit with basket masts.

Oooh! I wanna see that one. My next scratchbuild will be the protected cruiser USS San Franscisco from 1890.

Sounds like a good one too.

Illinois - must admit I like the class a lot.
