Thanks again Dan!
I will have to make the decision whether to include them or not a little bit later on, after I see how the model turns out. Or maybe I will run out of gas with all those tiny PE parts :heh: !

Hi all,
Can someone verify that the specific PE parts in Eduards set for Tone are part of the setup for the sun awning used in hot climate (rig up a large canvas to give some protection against sun)? Was this used regularly or what? Wondering if I should mount these or not?

I already have Goralski's book for Chikuma (older Tone version, even second hand, hugely expensive) with nice 3D pictures and 1/350th drawings. However, would be nice to have some additional literature (eg. mentioned here), but very difficult to find. So if any of you would like to sell some old books/drawings, I am interested. I am not aiming for a "perfectly" accurate model, but it would be nice to build something that is not completely out of books.

Thanks in advance.
Well you can try her original as laid down configuration (as ordered is almost the same as Mogami finished)

Here is as ordered form:

Or if you are really something into different, the Tone-Kai or Improved Tone Design would be nice as well:

The decks are covered with linoleum, though Mucho is certain that there is an outer strip of treaded metal on the boat deck. This would be aft of the aftmost twin 12.7cm mounts, though I'm not sure how far aft these would go. Possibly aft to the start of the aircraft trolley rails.

No mfg. has this specific layout.

It seems like every model manufacturer shows different arrangements of what parts of the decks are steel and which are linoleum. After reading through this topic on page 12, I am still not sure. I hope you can clarify this? Perhaps one of the model companies has it right or a link to a model or drawing? Any help would be appreciated.

The two sisters were remarkably identical. Pre-war, the only readily visible difference was the location of a 2kw lamp high up on the foremast (first 2 photos).

AFAIK, the only difference in their 1944 fit was the location of some AA (3rd photo).

Hello to all you Tone-class fans.

I am a modeller from Russia. My best friend has got 2 Tamiya 1/350 kits, IJN Tone and IJN Chikuma, and is now trying to figure out what can he make of them. He asked me to post the following questions here: 1) How similar is 1939 Chikuma kit to historical 1939 IJN Tone and what needs to be done to convert the former into the latter? 2) Can the 1944 Tone kit be built into 1944 Chikuma and what needs to be rebuilt/changed for that?

Thanks in advance for your answers.

The sides had about 65mm air space between the armor and the side plating, the turret tops had about 85mm spacing, which is why you see all those horizontal vent holes along the top of the turret, to let the air flow through.

The ribbing on the outside of the turret are stiffeners or fasteners; I'm actually not sure. They are much smaller than most scale depictions, 20mm wide by 5mm high, which makes me think they are fasteners. Seems too thin to be a stiffener.

Hi Dan,

thanks for the info :thumbs_up_1:

Have a nice weekend!

Hi all,

wondering of the construction of Tones main battery. Did they have spaced armour plating? The pattern on the side plates... is this stiffening or reinforcements, please?

TIA :wave_1:

Miyukikai removed his prices from his website, but from webarchives I see the latest price for this one was 60EUR, so 70EUR including postage? Includes hazard pay to go to the post office....
Hi,

thanks for checking your archives. I would buy it :thumbs_up_1: If you like you can wait with the shipping when you feel more comfortable with the situation due to corona.
Payment via PayPal? I send you a PM with my details.

The drawing doesnt seem to include cross sections or stations of the hull?

Bye,
Bernd.

UPDATE: The stations are in the lower right corner ... :thumbs_up_1:

Sadly, I don't have a set for Tone or Chikuma.

If you haven't already checked out the Miyukikai website, there are some very interesting 3DCG renderings of several ships, including Tone. The Agano class renderings are as recent as January, 2020:

Hi,
to me ist seems that his originals were damaged. Thats a loss! :-(
I asked him if the modeling community could help him. will post when he answers.

Would anyone be willing to sell some TONE plans in 1/200 or 1/100 scale?

Best wishes
Bernd.
