Dear Mr Baumann:

Might you be available for commission to construct me the USS Brooklyn as you built but perhaps as a full whole model I think your work and enhance detail was gorgeous and I'm interested in a hire! Or can any other accomplished builder respond, if capable and interested?'

Dont forget to drill out the hawsepipes for the anchor chain!

Apropos the bridge tower mast...

The YS kit usefully has the undercut depicted correctly- by using a seperate deck piece inserted

this will need careful painting and blending to disguise the join--a few appropriate sailors standing around there will detract the eye.

However--the deck is a bit flexible there--so that the whole bridge and mast will be weak and in danger of bending the deck.

Here is what you should do:

reinforce the UNDERSIDE of the deck piece with some styrene, wood or resin scrap.

Drill through the deck and install a spigot of brass or steel rod/tube that goes right down into the hull as well

drill corresponding hole in underside of the bridge tower pices

this will give mechanical support vertically as well as mechanically to the very tall masts...

I wish Jim would have waterlined this for me, too

By the way ... I forgot to thank Jim for the support and many helpful information he gave to me!!! Many, many thanks for that! :wave_1:

Here are some additional pics I made. I couldnt upload them yesterday. So enjoy (hopefully  )!

Best regards

Yes... I'll be following this too. I bought the Brooklyn when it first came out... and Jim waterlined it for me on his sander a few years ago...

So... this is going to be really interesting... :thumbs_up_1:

Thomas, I'll be following this one with great interest. I've not yet attempted a resin kit, but I'm very anxious to. There are some really interesting subjects, like cruisers, that seem to be available only in resin.

Good luck on your build and thanks for sharing with us.

USS Brooklyn CA-3 - First Model

Hi all,

Im new here and new in modeling resin and plastic kits. My main activity is to build historical wooden model of ships from the age of sail. Then I saw the awesome buildings of Jim Baumann and became interested to see more of such buildings.

Then, a few weeks later my wife offered me the YS Masterpiece kit of the USS Brooklyn I metioned to her before. What a nice surprise! After ordering the kit arrived a week later at - as I can see - all is of a fantastic quality.

Because its my first modell dont damn me for mistakes etc. ... Im a bloody beginner. And because I have some other interests (wooden ship models, playing Jazz-guitar and archery) I will continue from time to time ... but unfortunately not very fast. So, please be patient ... :wave_1:

For the dateiled history of the USS Broolyn let me refer to Jims build log which - of course - is a reference to me:

http://www.modelwarships.com/reviews/sh ... oklyn.html

I planed to build USS Brooklyn as a waterline diorama. Unfortunately the kit was delivered as a full hull modell. So I had to remove the underwater hull with a sander. It was a very clever idea to do this outside and not in the living room (as I first planed to to!). I guess my understanding wife surely would have killed me! First I marked the waterline with a tape and then the sander came along. Because its just a small belt sander the line is not that propper as I planed ... so ok ... I guess the Brooklyn has to got through heavy waters in the diorama

After that I brusched the hull with a basic colour (grey) and painted the decks twice with Tamya sand colour. The caulcing was imitated by using a sharp pencil ... it worked well and Im quite happy with the result. The "superstructure" was painted with "buff" freom WEM which is a nice tone (later I washed it with water-thinned burned umbra acrylic).

Then the hull was painted in a white and the rest of the underwater-hull in a dark red. Unfortunately the tape I used to build a propper waterline removed the white colour partly when I took it away in the end ... bloody beginner mistake??? So I had to recolour the line by hand.

So, thats for today. Find enclosed some pics of my results (I hope in a chronical order) ...

Best regards
Thomas
