I've explained this in my Dreadnought build thread just yesterday.
As already mentioned give the deck a coat of ACRYLIC clear to seal it. After a couple of days, it will be hard enough that you can apply enamels to your hearts content and play with it as much as you like.
If you need a really tough surface, use Tamiya X-22 as it dries glass hard and totally clear. Failing that, for speed and convenience use Future/Klear floor polish as mentioned by oierlings.
