Ship deck painting enamel wash effects

I am in the process of painting my full hull Fuso 1938 1/700, but after doing an enamel wash I realized the deck looks considerably dirtier, not the effect I want. However, as I try to clean up the deck, I realize any more cleaning cleans up the deck and removes the enamel paint from the deck. My friend advise me to ensure a smoother finish to the deck but I do not know how. I am using acrylic spray cans and tamiya black enamel. Please advise.

Hey Gareth,

I've explained this in my Dreadnought build thread just yesterday.

As already mentioned give the deck a coat of ACRYLIC clear to seal it. After a couple of days, it will be hard enough that you can apply enamels to your hearts content and play with it as much as you like.

If you need a really tough surface, use Tamiya X-22 as it dries glass hard and totally clear. Failing that, for speed and convenience use Future/Klear floor polish as mentioned by oierlings.
