Tools, good ones
engineers square, straight edge, protractor, dividers, circle cutter, to name just a few.
You will also find that you get through a lot of blades, remember clean sharp cuts make lighter work.

First decision; full hull or waterline! This determines somewhat optimal construction methods.

Second: Material you are most comfortable and skilled working with? Plastic, wood, resin, fiberglass? Many[i] scratch [/i]projects utilize some commercial components, fittings, propellers etc. Or would you rather scratch everything!
