I'm not the type to do extensive preparation on colour, often it's a case of look at a photo or 2, look at other people's build for inspiration, then have a look at what's available in my spare box.
The light grey is Royal Light Grey from Tamiya - I slightly darkened it not because of any particular reference but because the paint I use for touch up - Life Color's light grey (erm..unfortunately the number is no longer readable, a problem with most life colour bottle markings, the paint come off as easily as the paint it self!) is a shade darker and I wanted a base coat that can be easily painted over with touch up without looking off.
Because I'm lazy, the dark grey camou were hand painted with Life Color - I used Medium Grey in this instance but I feel it is a shade too dark for my liking, also the correct colour should have a tinge of blue/greenish to it which I didn't bother with.
All steel deck upper surfaces are painted Dark Sea Grey.
For pattern/colour references I primarily used WEM's Barham kit, and tossed the Trumpeter's colour profile as a matter of habit
