You might try round beads. They come in small sizes and if you find the right ones, they're perfectly round. Others have some flat spots where the hole is drilled for the necklace but even those could work as that part would just need some putty. I picked up an assorted pack in the jewelry section of an arts and crafts store ranging from 4-8mm in diameter.
Try sanding them while holding in a set of locking pliers or similar tool until you get half circles. Scribe some panel lines, paint them white, and viola!
